The Digimon Card Game Twitter has updated with card previews from Booster Set 12 Across Time. This time it's Wisemon, AncientWisemon, & Demon of Laplace.

It's a Wisemon type of day... Wisemon is another one that feels like it's a more detailed take on his basic profile art, showing it with it's book and the Space-Time Stones. AncientWisemon continues the take-off on the profile art, going with a very nicely painted style with some great lighting effects, while Demon of Laplace shows off one of the signature attacks of AncientWisemon, using it's wisdom to calculate the location of the spirit world and capturing it's enemies there forever.

the original mutant that gave us the super fun Mutant family of digimon and its modern descendant, Wisemon. It's interesting that normal Wisemon isn't a mutant itself.

Wisemon
Ultimate | Virus | Wizard
[On Play] [When Digivolving] Reveal the top 3 cards of your deck. Add 1 black or purple Digimon card from among the revealed cards to your hand. Return the remaining cards to the top or bottom of your deck in any order.
-
Inherited Effect: <Blocker>

AncientWisemon
Mega | Virus | Ancient Mutant / Ten Warriors
[Opponent's Turn] (Once Per Turn) When your opponent's Digimon attacks, you may reveal the top 3 cards of your deck. Play 1 black card with a play cost of 6 or lower from among the revealed cards without paying its memory cost. Trash the rest of the cards revealed by this effect.
[When Deleted] You may play 1 level 4 or lower black card with [Hybrid] in its traits from your hand without paying its memory cost.

Demon of Laplace
[Main] 1 of your opponent's Digimon gains "[Start of your Main Phase] Attack with this Digimon" until the end of your opponent's next turn.
-
[Security] Add this card to your hand.

Seeing those cards makes me want to see the tiny "Wisemon" card traders to become a new digimon with Adult level for their new evo line to add.

Yeah, I would say they are hinting at a stand-in or rather non-hybrid pre-evo alternative to whatever the non-existent dual spirit of steel is. In a way I can see Wisemon that way - much like how I can see Daipenmon working - with the two magic balls representing the H and B spirit of steel... buuuut Wisemon in no way feels like he should be representing steel with his demonic appearance.

I would welcome the idea of seeing canonic actual hybrid dual spirits for the other 5 of them (Duskmon included), but I doubt the card game will just start dropping new forms out of nowhere. We only had 1 exception with Greymon X (Virus).

Yeah Wisemon is acting as the stand in lv5. This is why Beast should've been lv5, the evil guys don't have combined forms. Water will get Mermaidmon as a stand in. Arbormon would have a random since there's no Traiomon. Grumblemon would have Volcamon I guess?

AncientWisemon might be the reason why Frontier's Mercuremon has the same vibe like Adventure's Piemon.

Also, AncientWisemon here reminds me of the hooded monster from Survive.

Bare in mind that Steel as an element within Frontier has a strong link to magic and mysticism with AncientWisemon having an alchemist vibe with its head ornament being invocative of a weighing scale and its link to the supernatural as well as it and Mercuremon's magic mirror motif and Sephirothmon being based on the eleven (technically ten) spheres of existence in Kabbalah, even being named after the collective term for them.

regular Wisemon's profile does relate it to specifically Piedmon so there's a vague connection

Yeah, I just like the connection is there (Frontier's Mercuremon and Adventure's Piemon) even if it wasn't intentional.

Pretty cool to have Wisemon be Mercurymon's stand-in for a LV5 since he was an important ally to Taiki in XW so it ties Frontier in well into this Set beyond just Takuya's appearance in Hunters' finale.

Is there any reason people are saying Wisemon is a stand-in for the fusion hybrid of steel beyond it just being a possible connection between Mercuremon/Sephirothmon and AncientWisemon here? Like, does the card do something that the fusion hybrids' cards did?

Also, Mercuremon and Sephirothmon both appeared in Xros Wars, with Sephirothmon even being the primary villain in a Hunters episode, so AncientWisemon is the only odd one out here.

Because ancientwisemon is the guy who made the steel spirits and the card game uses the ancients as the Megas for the hybrids (e.g. Rhinokabuterimon for Beetlemon). Therefore Mercurymon needs a lv5 to bridge into AncientWisemon and who better than regular Wisemon? The fact they're in both hunters and Frontier is just a cool thing that allowed them into this set

Wisemon’s effect also ties into the black Hybrid deck of this set well, in addition to working just as well as the actual Hybrids with AncientWisemon’s effects. The way the cards were revealed together, the way their effects work together, on top of the general connections you could draw is why everyone is saying Wisemon is the Level 5 stand-in, because it quite literally is the stand-in for this deck.

If he’s intended for a Fusion stand-in (which I’m not sure he is), it would make DaiPenmon less of an outlier.

I guess this is true lol, but Daipenmon being weird is just Daipenmon being weird. It doesn’t even match up with its respective Ancient Digimon, unlike Wisemon or Mermaimon would.

I think he's just AncientWisemon's pre-evolution and not the fusion of Mercuremon and Sephirothmon.
Being the Level 5 stand-in doesn’t mean it’s a fusion though. It’s a “stand-in” because it’s filling in the spot for the evolution line as they work together in the same deck.

Ultimately, Wisemon is not a Hybrid and there’s no retcon to Frontier happening or something like that. This is just the equivalent to a random evolution line like WarGrowlmon (Orange) to WarGreymon, just Digimon doing Digimon things. My suggestion to everyone is to just appreciate the cool evolution line and the card effects lol.
