"Ah shit..." Lia muttered to herself. She remembered that she did have one Potion on her person, but she would prefer to save it for as long as she could...Scooping her DemiVeemon up into her arms (which prompted a squeak of surprise from the Digimon), she ran through the first opening she spotted, her Kuramon floating swiftly after her.

[[OOC NOTE: A previous post has been revised. The Irregular Growth Plugin is now correctly described as blue rather than red. I apologize for the initial oversight.]]

*~-._/NATIVE FOREST — PATH TO DRILL TUNNEL ENTRANCE\_.-~*

The five wild Digimon tried to pursue Celia and her companions, but the two slower Moonmon among them kept falling behind. It wasn't long before they all gave up in exasperation and retreated back into the bushes.

The mountain didn't look that much further away; Celia could probably make it there uninterrupted within a few minutes if she booked it. Otherwise, she could try to find something easier to train against; judging by the continued rustling sounds, there were plenty more Digimon around just waiting for a good fight.

To initiate another encounter, choose one of the numbers below. Otherwise, proceed to your destination.

19, 27, 35
*~-._/NATIVE FOREST\_.-~*

No sooner had Chimchar materialized than a small, blue puffball on feet leaped out of the nearest bush and assumed a battle stance, snarling at David with a ferocity unbefitting its diminutive stature.

A wild Dorimon appeared!
Chimchar immediately went into action with an intense Leer. While this did seem to lower Dorimon's guard, it looked to be more out of anger than fear.

"You think you're all that just 'cause you're big and tough?!" it demanded. "I'll teach you a lesson, you scum! Metal Drop!"

It drew a deep breath and spit out a barrage of minuscule iron grains, which cut through Chimchar's skin like tissue paper.

Hit 4 times!
Still exhausted from the previous battle, this proved to be the final straw for the orange monkey. It fell to a knee before fully collapsing on the ground, unconscious.

Taking the time to switch Archen in had cost Oliver a turn, with Chapmon taking full advantage.

"Foam Shower!"

Despite being partially blinded, it managed to hit its target, albeit for minimal damage. Archen shook it off without much trouble, opening the next round by divebombing the Chapmon and striking with not only its full wing strength, but the Same-Type Attack Bonus as well. The attack sent the Digimon flying, its momentum abruptly halted a moment later by an inconveniently-placed tree. It lay stunned for a moment before struggling to force itself upright, its eyes wide with shock.

"Wha....w-what is that thing?!" it stammered. "F-Foam Shower!"

The attack came again with as little force as before. With Archen holding on strong at 81% health and Chapmon having been knocked down to 11.8% in just one hit, the victor was clear before the match was even over.

On the Special Promotions menu, Marjorie found only a message telling her to keep checking back every day to see if something was available. Typical.

Oliver was taken aback by the force Archen had achieved. Wing Attack had not seemed anywhere near as powerful when they were up against Marjie's Pokémon. Maybe it was partially because of the opponent's level. The boy grinned. Whatever the case, victory in his first Digimon battle seemed assured. "Looks like we're gonna win!" he declared. "Use Wing Attack again, Archie!"

Marjorie found nothing available in the second category either. In her head, she went over the stock of supplies she had. The same stuff her parents had given her, of course. She hadn't used any of it yet. She told herself she would, now that she was going to be a trainer. She looked up from the D-Terminal. Apparently she had wandered a bit, into a clearing. Yuramon was at her feet, but watching something off to the side. A wild Digimon was also in the clearing, glaring at them.

David was a bit frustrated, he had hoped Chimchar would withstand at least one attack, but it appeared the cards weren't in his favour.
He sent Mokumon into battle hoping that levelling up had healed him just like it has done in most of the Digimon games David had ever played.
"Okay Mokumon, try using that smoke attack again, that's sure to increase our chances!"

Looking over her shoulder to make sure she had lost her pursuers, Lia slowed to a stop, bending over to catch her breath.
"Hey, I can run too, y'know!" DemiVeemon remarked.
"Well sorry if I didn't wanna risk you slowing us down..." Lia exhaled once more, then began to swiftly progress to Drill Tunnel, not wanting to run into any other Digimon.

As David instructed, Mokumon started to make its move, but Dorimon was faster.

"Metal Drop!"

It seemed implausible that such an attack could harm an entity supposedly composed entirely of smoke, but nevertheless, the already vicious assault was even more devastating considering that Mokumon had not recovered since the last fight. The metal fragments passed through Mokumon's body with sharp popping sounds, leaving visible holes in the smoke and just barely missing David himself as they whizzed past.

Hit 3 times!
Its energy spent, Mokumon fell to the ground, its smoke dissipating to reveal its glowing DigiCore. Its molecular integrity briefly destabilized, threatening to derez if David didn't get it out of there fast.

Oliver's battle was a different story. As Archen closed in, the Chapmon shielded its face so as not to witness the moment of its own defeat.

WHAM!

If the attack had come any harder or faster, the little Digimon might have been decapitated. It rolled across the ground, slowing to a stop in an undignified posture and too weak to try and move. It, too, briefly destabilized, signifying that Oliver could finish it off completely if he wished, or else show mercy and ask it to join him.

In the clearing, Marjorie found herself being stared down by a tiny, yellow ball with a cat's ears and tail. It watched her with wary eyes, waiting to see what she would do.

A wild Nyaromon appeared!
*~-._/NATIVE FOREST EDGE — DRILL TUNNEL ENTRANCE\_.-~*

Several minutes passed as Celia made her way towards the cave, the occasional rustling in the bushes and trees potentially causing some distress. Every Digimon that showed its face, however, lost interest fairly quickly and disappeared back into the woods, leaving Celia alone.

At last, she reached the forest's edge at the foot of the mountain, where a wide cave entrance led into a surprisingly well-lit tunnel. The Digimon that lived here obviously weren't programmed with night vision.

Just then, a little bit to Celia's left, a section of a rock wall split and slid open slightly. Two little bipedal Digimon came running out with armfuls of something....mushrooms, maybe?

Noticing Celia out of the corners of their eyes as the false wall closed behind them, they stopped and waved her over.

"Hey!" said Pumpkinmon. "Hey, excuse us, miss? Are you a tamer? Could you help us out?"

"We'd sure appreciate it," said Gotsumon. "We'll make it worth your while!"

David panicked "Damn you Digimon games and your inconsistencies!"
He launched himself at Mokumons DigiCore and grabbing it and protecting it with his own body as he ran back to Primary Village as fast as he could hoping Gennai had a way to heal his wounded partner.

Lia had been preoccupied with looking into the entrance to Drill Tunnel; she hadn't noticed the false wall or the Digimon exiting said false wall. Therefore, Pumpkinmon's call caused her to jump slightly.
As she let DemiVeemon down, she approached the two Digimon; they seemed friendly enough, though at the same time, they were much stronger than her Digimon at the moment.
"What do you want a tamer for?" she asked them warily.

The daffy Chapmon was now obviously unable to battle. No, more than that: seemingly about to disappear. Certainly not okay. The distressing sight tamped Oliver's cheer. He put off the idea of trying to capture, instead trying to think of how to help. Pokémon in the wild often had comrades to care for them or at least safe places to rest while recovering. Did Digimon have that? He remembered Gennai saying something about sending Digimon to be reborn in Primary Village. Maybe that was the better option. According to the cartoon, they could come back to full strength eventually.
While Archen waited for his decision, Oliver addressed Poppie. "Um, do you know how to derez?" Although the Digimon had been reluctant to speak at first, it had said a few words since then, and he figured it could probably understand him.
"Yep. Just keep hitting them." A basic answer, but that was what the Popomon had been instructed to do.
"Okay." Oliver turned back to Archie, and issued the order with mixed feelings. "Attack again." The boy wondered if there was an Elecmon to take care of baby Digimon, or if Gennai did.

The first thing to do was analyze. Marjorie brought out her Digivice. As her brother had shown her on their way to the forest, information on the Digimon could be displayed. Once she was ready, she announced, "Battle start," as a courtesy. That was what the referees always did at school. "Yuramon, use Adhesive Bubbles." The opponent was at a higher level, but things would stay that way if Yuramon didn't gain experience.

There wasn't even a moment's hesitation. Archen's wing came down hard on the Chapmon one final time, and the defeated Digimon shattered into hundreds of tiny voxels. As the fragments began to dissolve, a blue, spiked object became visible floating just above the ground. It, too, dissolved after a moment, followed by a high-pitched beeping from Oliver's D-Terminal.

"ITEM REGISTERED," M.A.R.N.I. reported. "IRREGULAR GROWTH PLUGIN RECEIVED."

His Digivice also reported that Popomon had gained 3 Mb worth of experience, raising it to level 3. The Pokédex showed that Archen had gained 27 experience points.

Marjorie's command did not go unheeded, but her opponent was very slightly faster.

"Atomic Bomber Tail!" the Nyaromon cried, somewhat over-dramatically. The hairs on its tail stood up and stiffened into a needle-like form, which the little Digimon then used to strike Yuramon. The damage dealt was, of course, nowhere close to the level suggested by the attack's pretentious name, but against a Fresh Digimon, it left a visible mark.

Undeterred, Yuramon followed through with Marjorie's command.

"Adhesive Bubbles!" it yelled. A trail of bubbles came drifting out of where one assumed its mouth was, some of them popping on contact with the Nyaromon and causing some damage, while the rest stuck to its fur, impeding its movement somewhat.

It was tough to say who had the upper hand at this point. The Nyaromon had dealt more damage, holding on at 88.2% health while Yuramon was at 76.9%, but Yuramon had managed to reduce Nyaromon's speed by one stage.

*~-._/FILE CITY — PRIMARY VILLAGE\_.-~*

Gennai was, of course, right where he had been before, most likely waiting in case any more DigiDestined appeared. As yet, none had, but two Digi-Eggs had appeared; probably from deresolutions, he figured. The current DigiDestined were obviously hard at work.

At the sound of David's footfalls, Gennai turned with eyebrows raised, the sight of Mokumon's bare Digicore causing him mild alarm.

"Oh, dear me," he said. "My most sincere apologies, I didn't realize the Digimon in the forest would be quite that strong already."

He pointed in the direction of the city's main district, a much more modern-looking area.

"There's a repair shop in File City's main district run by Datamon, where you can have your Digimon defragmented and debugged. It isn't an instantaneous process, so if your Pokémon are in similar shape, you could probably return to your own world and take them to a Pokémon Center while you're waiting."

After a moment, he gave a wry smile.

"You should probably also feed them, if you haven't already. Battling works up quite an appetite."

*~-._/NATIVE FOREST EDGE — DRILL TUNNEL ENTRANCE\_.-~*

The two Digimon grinned broadly, holding up the mushrooms in their arms for Celia to inspect.

"You see," said Pumpkinmon, "we're trying to collect as many Digimushrooms as we can. They keep our lord Myotismon....happy."

They snickered.

"It's a hard job for just the two of us," Gotsumon elaborated. "But we can't quit. If Lord Myotismon ever ran out of mushrooms, he'd be furious, and all we'd hear twenty-four-seven would be 'kill this, destroy that, bring me a latte', and that's not good news for anyone."

"It'd sure be a lot easier if we had some help," said Pumpkinmon. "And around here, there's no better help than a Digimon tamer!"

Gotsumon nodded in agreement.

"So here's our proposal," it said. "As you travel around the Digital World, try and collect as many Digimushrooms as you can find for us, and for every....oh, let's say, twenty-five mushrooms you bring us, we'll give you something cool!"

"Growth Plugins, Option Cards, even Digivolutions, if we've got 'em," Pumpkinmon offered. "So, what do you say? Will you lend us a hand?"

They waited expectantly for Celia's answer. If she had been playing this from the other side of the screen, this would probably be the part where the "Yes/No" box came up.

Lia thought for a moment. She wondered how this 'Myotismon' had gotten these two to work for him in the first place, let alone task them with this grueling ordeal. Still, it sounded like this could be something both parties could benefit from.
"Alright," she nodded, "I'll keep my eyes peeled for 'em. Where can I find you guys?"

Oliver took the D-Terminal out from his vest, and Archen rested again on his shoulder to peer at the screen as well. There was some kind of new item, apparently the same as the one he'd seen briefly when the wild Digimon vanished. The boy decided to consider - whatever this was - a gift. That made him feel better. His own party was still in good health, so he decided to continue exploring in the forest, heading southeast.

Yuramon was damaged, but not too badly. Nothing to worry about yet. "Keep going. Adhesive Bubbles," Marjorie ordered again.

David thanked Gennai for the information as he proceeded to go to the Repair Shop.
"Hello? Datamon? Can you help us? My partner Digimon is in a pretty rough shape" taking heavy breaths between sentences due to the exhaustion that he felt from running so much.

Apologies for the delay, I haven't been sleeping well lately. On with the show.

*~-._/NATIVE FOREST EDGE — DRILL TUNNEL ENTRANCE\_.-~*

The two Digimon grinned broadly.

"If we're not traveling," said Gotsumon, "we'll usually check into any of the larger settlements on File Island, Server Continent, Folder Continent or Directory Continent."

"Otherwise, don't worry about finding us," said Pumpkinmon. "We'll bump into you sooner or later!"

"Thanks a lot, you're really saving our skins!"

"We'd better get going now. Good luck!"

And with that, the two Digimon trotted off into the forest, the direction that Celia had just come from. Once again, she and her partners were left alone.

*~-._/NATIVE FOREST — PATH TO TROPICAL JUNGLE\_.-~*

If Oliver were to ask M.A.R.N.I. for the world map, he would find he was traveling in the direction of Tropical Jungle. Along the way, the sounds of Digimon moving between the shrubs had noticeably diminished; perhaps he had frightened them with his deresolution of the Chapmon.

Still, they weren't completely gone. One or two noises nearby indicated that something might have been bold enough to try and attack....

*~-._/NATIVE FOREST\_.-~*

The previous attack seemed to have done its job well, as Yuramon now had the speed advantage.

"Adhesive Bubbles!" it yelled again, releasing another spray of bubbles Nyaromon's way. As before, some of the bubbles exploded on contact, leaving visible bruises, while others simply stuck to its fur and made it harder to move.

Frustrated, the Nyaromon struggled to free itself from enough of the bubbles to execute another attack.

"Atomic Bomber Tail!" it cried. The hardened, pointed tail hairs came down again like a spiked club, though with slightly less force than before.

Thus far, the match did not appear to be in Yuramon's favor. Although it had gained the upper hand in terms of speed, the Nyaromon still appeared to be stronger. It stood firm at 76.5% health, while Yuramon was visibly more fatigued at 61.5%.

*~-._/FILE CITY — MAIN DISTRICT, DATAMON'S COMPUTER REPAIR SHOP\_.-~*

The inside of the modestly-sized shop seemed fairly ordinary, with shelves of computer parts lined up against the walls. Behind the service counter, a pair of mechanical eyes beneath a domed glass helmet peeked out at David.

"What is the meaning of this interruption?!" the little robot demanded. "I'm in the middle of an important experiment and cannot—"

Then it noticed the exposed DigiCore in David's hands.

"Oh, it's just a tamer with another defrag job," it sighed. "Fine, then, leave it here and come back in about half an hour. It's a pity I can't charge for this service, but they tell me it would make the game unbalanced if I did. Of all the ridiculous excuses!"

Now strolling along a path between the trees, Oliver looked side to side, up and down for any Digimon. He didn't have to search long before Archie squawked a warning. Out of the brush came a new challenger. As before, Oliver let Poppie go to the front and instructed it to use Hair Mist. Maybe the attack would be more effective since the Popomon had gained some experience.
[34]

Although Yuramon appeared to be breathing more heavily, Marjorie called for the seed Digimon to repeat its previous attack. It wouldn't actually be in any danger as long as the battle continued along the same trend and she acted at the right time. A new concern occurred to her. While the combatants' turns played out, she pressed the help button of the D-Terminal. "Do items meant for Pokémon work on Digimon, too?" she queried.

David thanks the Datamon "I-ll leave him in your care" and proceeds to leave the shop, he goes back to Gennai and asks him:
"Uh, my Chimchar is also in pretty bad shape, how do I get back to the outside world? I kind of need to find a Poké Center."

Watching the pair as they left, Lia's gaze drifted back to the entrance to Drill Tunnel. "Right, might as well get started here..."
DemiVeemon spoke up. "Uh, don't you think you should find some way of healing us, first?"
"Hmph... Fair point." Consulting M.A.R.N.I. once more, she asked, "Hey M.A.R.N.I., how can I heal my Digimon's HP?"

"Hair Mist!"

Popomon wasted no time assaulting its foe before it could even be conclusively identified. The cloud of fur blasted out, obstructing the wild Digimon's vision and briefly obscuring it from Oliver's view. After a moment, however, the Digivice was able to return an analysis.

A wild Tsunomon appeared!

Irritated that its mathematically superior speed had been thwarted by a surprise attack, the horned furball drew a deep breath.

"Bubbles!" it cried. Like many of the other In-Training Digimon in the forest, its attack strategy seemed to consist entirely of spitting bubbles at its opponent. The attack hit its mark in spite of the Tsunomon's impeded vision, dealing decent damage. A Pokédex scan would show that the Same-Type Attack Bonus was in effect.

It appeared that Popomon was not cut out for solo combat at its current Digivolutionary level, with its sole attack displaying all the characteristics of a non-damage-dealing status move. It was starting to show signs of wear at 58.8% health, while Tsunomon had yet to acquire so much as a scratch.

Don't expect that "attack-before-you-see-it" trick to work 100% of the time. Tsunomon has superior Speed and should have moved first; I only realized I had made a mistake after I had already written the entire round. I decided to leave the goof in this time because I deemed it to be more interesting and natural from a narrative standpoint.
*~-._/NATIVE FOREST\_.-~*

Yuramon dutifully did as instructed, firing off another blast of bubbles towards its feline adversary with much the same effect as before.

"Adhesive Bubbles!"

In addition to the visible damage being dealt, the Nyaromon's movements were becoming increasingly slower and more sluggish. Nevertheless, it lunged forward once again with its spiked tail.

"Atomic Bomber Tail!"

What followed was the least-expected thing that could have happened under the circumstances. In spite of the Nyaromon's restricted movement, its attack came with enough speed to find a weakness in Yuramon's defenses and strike through with surprising force, knocking it back hard.

A critical hit!
At Marjorie's query, M.A.R.N.I. once more flickered to life.

"ACCESSING RESTRICTED DIGIDESTINED DATABASE," she said. "AFFIRMATIVE. ANY MEDICINE OR OTHER CONSUMABLES THAT WOULD AFFECT THE POKÉMON 'PORYGON' WILL HAVE THE SAME EFFECT ON A DIGIMON."

Which was lucky, because Yuramon now stood at only 30.8% health compared to Nyaromon's 64.7%.

*~-._/FILE CITY — PRIMARY VILLAGE\_.-~*

Gennai regarded David with a confused expression.

"The method hasn't changed since the last time I told you," he said in a mostly calm, yet slightly exasperated tone. "Using the buttons on the right side of your Digivice, scroll through the options until you see 'Return', then press the left button. You will instantly be transported back through the computer terminal you used to get here."

*~-._/NATIVE FOREST EDGE — DRILL TUNNEL ENTRANCE\_.-~*

Once again, Celia's D-Terminal displayed the world map, highlighting locations on several landmasses.

"COMPUTER REPAIR SERVICES ARE AVAILABLE IN MOST MAJOR SETTLEMENTS," M.A.R.N.I. reported. "THE CLOSEST SETTLEMENTS ARE FILE CITY, LOCATED NORTHEAST OF NATIVE FOREST, AND YOKOMON VILLAGE, LOCATED IN THE GEAR SAVANNAH TO THE WEST OF MIHARASHI MOUNTAIN."

"Hm... Guess I better head for this 'Yokomon Village', then."
With that, Lia began to head off in the direction M.A.R.N.I. had indicated would lead her there, her DemiVeemon following behind her.

The battle had not continued along the same trend. Marjorie knew another critical hit would put Yuramon on the brink of fainting, if not knock it out completely. She brought out her single Potion and moved to apply it.
Yuramon shivered as the spray coated it. "That feels weird," it complained.
Marjorie smiled. "It's medicine," she explained. "You should be okay now. Use Adhesive Bubbles again when you're ready." She backed up, keeping an eye on the Nyaromon. Had the D-Terminal said 'restricted'?

Popomon cast its eyes toward the ground, expecting its trainer would be disappointed. Its fellow team member was so cool, being able to trounce an opponent in two swipes. Shaking off a little fur didn't compare at all.
Oliver checked the Digivice. He recognized this kind of Digimon from the T.V. show. Its blade appeared more formidable now. His own Digimon would be disappointed in him if he kept sending it in against tougher opponents. Concerned about Poppie's health, he had Archen switch in again. "Don't worry," he told the sunflower, "Archie can handle this." He still did not want to run. Deciding to go easier this time, he called for a Quick Attack.
