David glared at Bukamon "So that's it? All bark and no bite? And as soon as thing go wrong you put up such a pathetic display? Really, filth such as you who act like this have no place in this world"
Chimchar readied to make the finishing blow as David continued talking "I know very well, that as soon as I let my guard down, you'll attack and go back to talking shit. Don't underestimate us, I only let you fight Mokumon that much out of pity."
As he ended his sentence Chimchar launched forward baring his claws ready for one last Scratch.

Gennai shook his head.

"That's not completely accurate," he clarified. "If you decide to refuse the mission, then yes, you will be unable to return here once you leave. However, should you accept, you will be allowed to come and go as you please. It would look awfully suspicious if you just up and vanished for an extended period of time with no warning, and there are neither Poké Marts nor Pokémon Centers in the Digital World, which would make things quite inconvenient if you couldn't leave now and then."

He gestured toward the Digivices.

"By scrolling through the options using the buttons on the right side of your Digivices, you can select the 'Return' function, which will allow you to return to your own world at any time through the same computer terminal from which you entered. The next time you activate the Digital Gate, you will be returned to where you were before you left.

*~-._/NATIVE FOREST\_.-~*

Upon opening the D-Terminal to browse the Digivolution options, Celia was greeted by the same synthetic voice she had heard at the Digital Gate earlier.

"GREETINGS," it said. "I AM THE MOBILE, ARTIFICIALLY REPLICATED NEURAL INTELLIGENCEOR 'M.A.R.N.I.' FOR SHORT. IF YOU WOULD LIKE ASSISTANCE WITH ANY PART OF DIGIMON WORLD ONLINE, SIMPLY PRESS THE 'HELP' ICON AND STATE YOUR QUESTION VERBALLY."

On the screen were several options:

-Manage Party
-Manage Items
-Online Store
-Options
-Help
-Exit

As purchasable powerups, Digivolution options were to be found on the Online Store. For Kuramon, the options were:

-Tsumemon — FREE
--REQUIREMENTS:
---One (1) Regular Growth plugin installed [x]

-Pagumon — FREE
--REQUIREMENTS:
---One (1) Irregular Growth plugin installed [x]

Wait, what? What was this nonsense about "growth plugins" all of a sudden?

Meanwhile, David's battle was essentially over. Bukamon tried to scramble away before Chimchar could catch it, but its effort was wasted. With one final blow, Chimchar struck Bukamon down, sending it rolling across the ground before it came to a halt in a dazed heap.

Just like DemiVeemon earlier, its molecular integrity briefly destabilized, signifying that David could choose to derez it if he wished. If he instead chose to spare it, he could also offer to recruit it.

Lia scratched her head, sitting down as she looked at the options available, her Kuramon peeking over her shoulder at the screen. She wasn't as familiar with Digimon as she was with Pokémon; this all seemed so new to her... Good thing she had an A.I. that could answer any questions she had.
Going back and tapping the Help icon, Lia asked, "M.A.R.N.I., what're 'Growth plugins'?"

Oliver raised his Digivice to take another look. The screen was active now with a greenish display, similar to the default of the Pokétch. "That makes sense", he said about Gennai's response. "We couldn't be Pokémon Masters if we were stuck in here." He did not mind the idea of adventuring in the Digital World for a while, just like in the show, but he supposed he would not want to be here forever. Being able to journey in either realm whenever he pleased was even more awesome.
"Oh. Yes, that's good to hear." Marjorie was a little ashamed she had jumped to conclusions again. It had happened before - her being so concerned about details that she missed some of them - enough times she should know better. The situation wasn't as binding as she had anticipated, unless she refused the offer. She watched her brother admiring both the Digivice and the Popomon. She was fairly sure what the answer would be, but she asked anyway. "Ollie, you want to stay, right?"
After a moment, Oliver replied, cautiously. "Yeah, I want to be a digidestined." He had wanted to set out as soon as he received his Archen, but he also wanted his sister by his side. At first he pestered her to go. Eventually he decided to likewise bide his time. He still did not fully understand her reasons for hesitating. He could see she was probably mulling things over. Would she be upset at him?
"Alright, I'll be one too - a digidestined," Marjorie finally agreed. She smiled slightly, half nervous and half excited. Time to put what she had learned into action.
Yuramon squeaked in approval.

Alright, sorry, saifors, but we've gotta keep things moving.

*~-._/FILE CITY — PRIMARY VILLAGE\_.-~*

Gennai gave a nod, his expression somewhere between approval and resignation.

"Very good," he said. "In that case, you'll be needing these."

He once again reached into his satchel and produced two more D-Terminals. Clearly, it was programmed to have limitless capacity.

"These will help you manage your Digimon and any items you obtain in the Digital World," he explained, offering the devices to Oliver and Marjorie. "They are also equipped with detailed help documents that will explain anything I haven't already. To access them, all you have to do is tap the 'Help' icon and verbally ask a question. Kind of like Google Home, come to think of it. Isn't technology convenient?"

*~-._/NATIVE FOREST\_.-~*

In immediate response to Celia's query, the D-Terminal projected two holographic images just above the screen: on the left was a regular icosahedron, and on the right was a medial triambic icosahedron.

"GROWTH PLUGINS ARE PROGRAMS THAT AID IN BOTH TEMPORARY AND PERMANENT DIGIVOLUTION," M.A.R.N.I. explained. "REGULAR GROWTH PLUGINS, LIKE THAT SEEN ON THE LEFT, ARE REQUIRED FOR MOST 'CONVENTIONAL' DIGIVOLUTION PATHS, WHILE IRREGULAR GROWTH PLUGINS, SUCH AS THAT SEEN ON THE RIGHT, ARE NEEDED FOR MORE UNUSUAL DIGIVOLUTION PATHS. THEY CAN COMMONLY BE OBTAINED AS DROPS FROM DERESOLVED DIGIMON. LESS COMMONLY, FRIENDLY CHARACTERS MAY TRADE THEM FOR DIGIMUSHROOMS FOUND IN DUNGEONS."

"Huh, okay... so that's what I can get out of derezzing Digimon..."
To be honest, Lia didn't like the idea of derezzing Digimon, but if that was one of only two ways of getting these "Growth Plugins", then it looked like she didn't have much of a choice. Plus, now she had to debate what would be the better choice after battles: derezzing a Digimon for growth plugins, or trying to convince it to join her.
If one thing was clear to her, it was that Digimon were much more complicated than the Pokémon she grew up with.
Although... M.A.R.N.I. had mentioned there being friendly characters who would trade Growth Plugins for Digimushrooms, which she could find in dungeons. That looked like the closest thing she had to an immediate goal right now. Plus she might find something else while she was there.
"M.A.R.N.I.," she asked, "are there any dungeons in the Native Forest? Or any close to it?"

The twins took the portable consoles they had been handed.
Oliver wondered if the device was actually necessary and if there would be any more. Gennai called this convenient, but Ollie didn't think so. The Pokédex was complicated enough. Couldn't someone just upgrade that to register Digimon as well? He didn't have any immediate use for the help manual, so he put away the terminal. He was running out of pockets.
Marjorie thanked Gennai for the peripheral. From the description, it seemed to her like a physical version of DWO's user interface. She reminded herself that she was in a version of the game after all. Maybe all she had to do was play like she had been for a while. That didn't seem so difficult. So at the beginning of the game... "Are these the Digimon we start with?" she asked Gennai, indicating the Yuramon.
That was right. Of course they needed Digimon if they were digidestined, Ollie remembered. He pointed the Digivice toward the sunflower and clicked the scanning feature he had noticed. A good idea to know the Digimon's name, if he was indeed allowed to keep it.
"Are there other places we can find more?" Marjorie continued.
"We can have more than one?" Ollie gasped excitedly. This was getting better and better.

The Digivice's Analyzer utility flickered to life at once, identifying the Digimon that stood at Oliver's feet.

3EuGaL8.png

"Correct on all counts," Gennai smiled. "These will, indeed, be your first Digimon partners. In addition, when you defeat a Digimon in battle, if you choose not to derez it, you can attempt to persuade it to join your party. You'll find them all over the Digital World. At the moment, you're standing in Primary Village, a district of File City at the center of File Island. To the southwest of the city is the Native Forest, an area full of In-Training Digimon that have just recently left the village."

*~-._/NATIVE FOREST\_.-~*

The holograms of the Growth Plugins disappeared, a map with a blinking red marker taking their place.

"AFFIRMATIVE," M.A.R.N.I. confirmed. "DRILL TUNNEL IS LOCATED ON THE WESTERN SIDE OF NATIVE FOREST, AT THE FOOT OF MIHARASHI MOUNTAIN."

Popomon - that was the species of the Digimon. And it was already his friend. Oliver came up with a nickname quickly, as he had done for his Archen before. There were apparently also wild Digimon to battle and form a party with. Just like Pokémon training, or at least that was how it sounded. "Southwest? Got it," Oliver confirmed. He glanced up to check the sun's position and get his bearings. Then he headed off towards a line of trees. His Digimon hopped after him, straining to keep pace.
Marjorie watched as her brother started trotting toward the forest. Going off on his own again and expecting her to have to catch up. She turned back to Gennai and thanked him again. "I guess we're going now." She still had plenty of questions, but the elderly guide had made a point to inform them of the manual in the D-Terminal. He probably thought they would figure things out on their own. Marjorie picked up Yuramon, waved, and then followed after Ollie. She supposed they could at least look around a little while, But we'll have to be back by dinnertime. Then she amended the thought, At least for tonight.

DemiVeemon perked up at the mention of Drill Tunnel.
"Okay, Drill Tunnel at Miharashi Mountain, got it," Lia nodded, stowing away her D-Terminal.
"Drill Tunnel? I've heard of that place," her DemiVeemon spoke up. "I can lead you guys there, if you want."
"Sounds good," Lia agreed, rising to her feet. To her Kuramon, she said, "Guess you'll have to stay at your current stage for a while yet."
Kuramon seemed slightly disappointed, but also looked like it understood.
And so, recalling her Totodile into its Poké Ball, they began to follow DemiVeemon through the Native Forest towards Drill Tunnel.

Gennai gave a nod as the twins made their way to the forest.

"Good luck, DigiDestined," he said. "May the Sovereigns watch over you."

*~-._/NATIVE FOREST — PATH TO DRILL TUNNEL ENTRANCE\_.-~*

As Celia walked, the trees gradually began to thin out. In the distance, a pair of high peaks became visible—DemiVeemon was leading her in the direction of the shorter and less pointed of the two, obviously Miharashi Mountain. The other one was most likely Infinity Mountain, if prior entries in the franchise were anything to go by.

The place was clearly scaled down compared to the TV show, as walking from one major location to another could have potentially taken multiple days otherwise. Nevertheless, like most games, the environment was of sufficient size to provide a satisfactory illusion of distance. More rustling could still be heard in the trees and shrubs along the way.

To initiate another encounter, choose one of the numbers below. Otherwise, proceed to your destination.

18, 25, 31

*~-._/NATIVE FOREST\_.-~*

Meanwhile, the twins had now fully entered the forest and found themselves surrounded by lush, green foliage. The air temperature and humidity remained perfectly balanced for a leisurely stroll. If one didn't know any better, one would think there was nothing wrong with the Digital World at all.

The calm was short-lived, however, as it wasn't long before they, too, heard the sounds of tiny Digimon scurrying through the woods.

To initiate an encounter, choose one of the numbers below.

OLIVER: 5, 13, 18

MARJORIE: 14, 20, 22

Lia slowed as the rustling about them met their ears.
"DemiVeemon, wait," she said, causing the small Digimon to halt and walk closer to her. They and Kuramon looked about, watching for any Digimon that might try to attack them. Lia couldn't help but wonder what other Digimon might pop out of the brush this time...

Marjorie was able to catch up to her brother as he paused to look around the woods. She took in a large breath of the clear air. This type of terrain was just as familiar as the village, comforting. Between the tree she noticed the shapes of two trainers. She considered calling out to them, but they appeared to be preoccupied. There weren't many opportunities to fight wild creatures back home. She figured it best to try to prepare. She opened the D-Terminal and was greeted by a robotic message.
Oliver overheard and began to chuckle. "M.A.R.N.I? Kinda like your name," he teased his sister, "It even sounds boring like you."
"Not really. And I don't sound boring!" Marjorie tried a playful punch, but her sibling scurried out of reach. She returned to the D-Terminal screen and selected the 'Online Store' feature.

Oliver had been instructed not to send out his Pokémon inside a town except for battle, but out in a forest was certainly fine. "Archie, come out," he called. The Archen materialized, flapping before him. He pointed out the seed-like Digimon. "Meet Poppie."
The Archen glided over, but after a moment started to pick at and chase the Popomon.
"No! Stop!" Ollie quickly commanded. "He's our new team member, not food." He sighed as Archie relented and alighted on his shoulder. Poppie was visibly relieved as well, but then it's attention was drawn upward. Apparently something had been startled from a nearby tree branch.

*~-._/NATIVE FOREST — PATH TO DRILL TUNNEL ENTRANCE\_.-~*

Several seconds of silence passed with nothing appearing to happen. It would have been easy to dismiss the rustling sound from before as a figment of one's imagination. That, of course, begged the question of just how exactly one defined "imagination" in digital terms. How did one's brain continue to function normally while in the form of data?

But before anyone could even begin to ponder such questions, the silence was finally broken. No less than five tiny Digimon sprang forth from the bushes—four blue in color and roughly turnip-shaped, and one a reddish-orange in the shape of a sun with a flame burning atop what one might charitably call its head.

Whoa! A horde of Moonmon appeared!
tYbT8YM.png

4vMdbug.png
Two of the blue ones moved in front of Celia to try and block her path, with the red one joining in on their left (Celia's right). The remaining two blue Digimon took up positions flanking Celia, all but surrounding her.

Luckily, they all seemed to be on the slow side, so escape was a viable option if necessary.

*~-._/NATIVE FOREST\_.-~*

And on that branch—a most peculiar place for this particular type of Digimon—sat a green, vaguely duck-like creature. The commotion from below had disturbed its sleep, causing it to reflexively jump about a foot in the air. It struggled for several seconds to regain its footing—no easy feat, considering its lack of feet—before finally slipping off and hitting the ground with a soft thud. It lay there a moment, grasping its head in pain, before turning to face Oliver.

A wild Chapmon appeared!

I apologize for my absence, went on winter vacation to my home country with my family and had limited access to internet.
David had derezzed the Bukamon, considering it useless to try and have him join him, he then proceeded to return Chimchar to his Poké Ball.
David wandered through the forest for a while, he noticed some new tamers who, like Lia had gotten into battles, some had gone to other areas, however, he had yet to get into a new battle.

Lia looked around at the multiple Digimon around her. She had heard of horde encounters being common in the Kalos and Alola regions, and she knew it was possible to encounter two Pokemon at a time in select patches of tall grass in Unova, but she wasn't aware it could happen in the Digital World, as well... She thought quickly, considering her options. Whether or not they could win this battle rode on one factor alone, otherwise they'd be forced to flee.
She checked her D-Terminal. She knew her Totodile's health probably wouldn't have been restored, so she wanted to save it as a last resort. Had her Digimon's HP been restored since the last battle?

Unable to catch it in time, Oliver peered at the finned creature as it flopped around. "Are you okay?" he asked. He figured it was, since it had moved into a stance as if it were ready to battle. Archen let out a squawk, but his trainer motioned for him to stay. "Let's let Poppie battle for a while." Ollie checked the Pokédex-for-Digimon to see about both the monsters. Popomon only had one technique, so the decision was easy. "Poppie, use Hair Mist!"

Marjorie briefly watched the source of the commotion. Good to know that Pokémon could be sent out without any problems. On the D-Terminal, she selected 'Option Cards'. If this was just like the game, digivolution probably wouldn't be available right away.

Indeed, Celia found that her Digimon had not recovered from the last fight, save DemiVeemon willing itself approximately one-fifth of its health back to avoid derezzing. If she still planned to fight, she would have to get creative.

As a reminder, Celia has one Potion she can use to heal either her Totodile or one of her Digimon, if she wishes.

*~-._/NATIVE FOREST\_.-~*

"No....NO!"

But the Bukamon's pleas fell on deaf ears. With one final strike, the Digimon exploded in a shower of tiny voxels, which then dissolved into shimmering dust before floating off into the sky.

Left in its place, hovering an inch above the ground and slowly spinning, was a glowing blue object in the shape of a medial triambic icosahedron. It remained there only a moment before it, too, dissolved. This was followed by a beeping sound from David's D-Terminal.

"ITEM REGISTERED," M.A.R.N.I. announced. "IRREGULAR GROWTH PLUGIN RECEIVED."

Not a moment later, the Digivice reported that Mokumon had gained 3 Mb worth of experience, raising it to level 3. The Pokédex also reported that Chimchar had gained 27 experience points.

As David wandered, the sounds of wandering Digimon persisted, although many of them seemed to be moving away from him. His casual derezzing of the Bukamon seemed to have spooked the other Digimon, and most of them obviously wished to avoid a similar fate.

Nevertheless, there were some bolder Digimon who remained nearby, ready to jump out at a moment's notice....

To initiate another encounter, choose one of the numbers below.

20, 30, 33

Meanwhile, Oliver would quickly discover that the wild Chapmon was, in fact, faster than Popomon.

"Foam Shower!" the duck cried, spewing forth a frothy stream of bubbles from its mouth. Despite presumably being a water-based attack, it dealt normal damage against the presumably plant-based Popomon, sending several tufts of hair flying.

Startled, but with plenty of energy remaining, Popomon went into battle mode.

"Hair Mist!" it shouted. A sizable amount of fur exploded from the little Digimon's body and flew into the Chapmon's face, clouding its vision. It stood there sneezing for several seconds, perhaps giving Oliver a chance to decide his next move before the next round properly opened. Popomon was still at 76.9% health and in no immediate danger.

On the Option Cards menu, Marjorie found eighteen powerups available:

-Attack Plugin A - ₱1,500
-Boost Chip - ₱1,500
-Defense Plugin C - ₱1,500
-High Speed Plugin B - ₱1,500
-White Wings - ₱1,500

-Battle Tomahawk - ₱3,000
-Brave Shield - ₱3,000
-Defense Plugin G - ₱3,000
-Devil Chip - ₱3,000
-High Speed Plugin H - ₱3,000
-Power Charger - ₱3,000
-Seed of Durability - ₱3,000
-Steel Drill - ₱3,000
-Strength Plugin W - ₱3,000
-Vulcan's Hammer - ₱3,000

-High Speed Plugin T - ₱4,600
-Invalidation Plugin P - ₱4,600

-The Sparkle of Destiny!! - ₱10,000

All of which cost more than she had.

David looked at where rustling came from "Huh, looks like there are at least some Digimon here who have something resembling a spine"
He summoned his Chimchar from its Poké Ball once more, the Pokémon readied for battle, preparing to use Leer as soon as possible.

Marjorie had hoped to purchase items that would give a boost in a battle. She presumed from some of the cards' titles that they had to do with stats, but a lot of them had fancy names that didn't inform of a technical use. They were all too expensive regardless. She returned to the previous menu and chose to see 'Special Promotions'. Perhaps there were some free offers.

"Woah!" Oliver exclaimed, impressed seeing the Digimon's attack. At least Poppie could do something besides spew bubbles like all the little Digimon on the show did. The opponent did not seem all that inconvenienced, though. Oliver double-checked the Digivice to make sure he hadn't missed another available technique. He found that the HP of both Digimon was also available. Poppie had been hurt; the Chapmon had not. The fight seemed uneven, but Oliver didn't want to run. In prior Pokémon battles, he let Archen try until the match was finally decided. The thought led him to a possible solution - now there were two. "Poppie, can Archie help you?"
The Popomon glanced back. Though unsure, it agreed and hopped away to the trainer.
Oliver nodded. "Alright. Go ahead Archie." He ordered a Wing Attack, which was, in his opinion, the Archen's coolest-looking attack.
[Archen's nature is Adamant.]
