13 episodes, half of the series....

Tenchi in Tokyo

Subbed on Hulu for free- http://www.hulu.com/tenchi-in-tokyo
Subbed on Funimation for free- http://www.funimation.com/shows/tenchi-muyo-tenchi-in-tokyo/videos

With the return of the 'primary' Tenchi-verse announced as coming back with OVA, thought it was a good time to jump to the last 'proper' Tenchi series (there have actually been 3 more, but 2 of those don't star Tenchi, and the third was a collection of minisodes.)

This one is a bit different. It again resets everything, but doesn't start at the beginning. It starts 'after' the gang has had their adventures. To some degree it sets itself up as a sequel to Universe, even if the flashback events clearly shows that it wasn't Universe.

Much like Universe though, this show got a new title when it came to the USA. Instead of Tenchi in Tokyo in Japan it was simply known as (with a touch of translating) 'New Tenchi Muyo'

We have a Tenchi who is moving away and the girls aren't that pleased.... especially when they find out Tenchi might like someone. And of course, bad things are going to happen.

Lot of fans weren't pleased by this, or by an art style that isn't as similar to the older Tenchi stuff as they would have liked.

New art.... acts as a sequel to prior material and has a story that some might see as a bit more mature, with a new mysterious character or two.... sounds a bit familiar doesn't it (tri.)

Won't go over all the Tenchi/Digimon connections, but on the Japanese side one of the primary new characters in Tokyo played Rhythm in the Savers movies. On the dub side... the other primary new character (avoiding names for some spoilery reasons) is played by the same actress who played Mimi's mom in the Adventure and 02 dubs.

I remember this one. It was pretty weird. Compared to the other two. It reminds me to wonder where he lived before everything started. But still, not a bad version. With Spoiler Character adding in an interesting twist. Maybe something like the 3rd part. The last new series.

People tend to forget, but at least in the OVA universe, this is answered in the opening episodes of the franchise.

As far as the OVA universe, he lived in the city with his dad and visited his grandfather during the summers. The house is 'relocated' next to the shrine and his grandfather's place after a battle.

As I recall this only specifically applies to the OVAverse (I vaguely recall the house just being 'near' the shrine in Universe.)

In Tokyo I believe they don't specifically mention it, but as I recall they 'suggest' Tenchi moved away awhile ago (and I recall at least one of his friends is designed after one of his friends in the OVA verse.) But I don't believe they strictly give us enough info in Tokyo to know for sure.

It's kind of funny because nothing really happens when not at the shrine. ...Except for this series. And anything in deep space/most of the "No Need For..." episodes.

Finished watching the series last night, and liked it pretty well. The setup was interesting. It didn't bother to reintroduce the characters, because, come on, we should know them all by now. It's interesting to see the different permutations in character histories and relationships across the various incarnations of the Tenchi franchise. Unlike in the previous two series, we don't have anyone imprisoned in the cave, Ryo-Ohki is Sasami's pet/protector instead of Ryoko's ship, and as far as I can tell
Tenchi and his grandfather are both fully human
. We even had Yuu-Ohki make a guest appearance as a guardian spirit. The "monster of the week" format was an interesting departure from the other series, but I found it enjoyable enough. Of the new characters, Yugi became rather interesting once she started doing more than laugh softly. On the whole I enjoyed the series, perhaps more than I did "Universe." The art didn't seem all that different to me, except for being maybe slightly more modern.

the third was a collection of minisodes.
That's GXP, I assume? By minisodes, do you mean something along the lines of Azumanga Daioh?

GXP was a full series but didn't star Tenchi (and it actually takes place AFTER OVA3, despite coming out before.)

There is also a spinoff that takes place long after OVA3 that has a different title based on where you live:
In Japan it's "Isekai no Seikishi Monogatari" (or translated literally as "Sage Machine Master Story in the Different World") but in most English speaking countries it's given the title of "Tenchi Muyo! War on Geminar" which stars a teenage Kenshi Masaki (son of Noboyuki and Rea, so Tenchi's half brother.)

The third is "Ai Tenchi Muyo" which is 50 4 minute chunklets, was cofunded by a Japanese city for tourism purposes, and introduces a ton of new characters.

GXP is canon to the OVAverse.
Geminar has been said to be canon to the OVAverse (and the person generally credited as the creator of Tenchi who is in charge of the OVAverse was in charge of it also.)

Ai much like Tokyo is a 'new sequel' that doesn't strictly connect to any universe, but vaguely wants to suggest Universe (minus that Kiyone doesn't seem to exist in Ai.) In addition the director was the director of Universe and two of the 3 movies. The minisodes tend to work like Azumanga's do. Various minisodes that form a larger episode.

The creator of Tenchi also created another series that has various tie ins to the OVAverse called "Dual! Parallel Trouble Adventure". It's a show that in many ways mirrors Tenchi, and is about alternate universes (and some hints in the show and from the creator suggest it's actually an alternate universe of Tenchi.) Certain elements also seem to tie in and mirror events in GXP on purpose (Dual came first). When GXP was fleshed out for novels alternate versions of a few Dual characters also show up.

Thus far it isn't quite explained if there is a deeper meaning, or if it's a detailed gag on fans.

Thanks for the explanation. I've been using a little text file I made a while back to keep the release date timeline straight:

1992 - Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ouki (OVA 1 & 2)
1995 - Tenchi Universe (Series)
1995 - Magical Girl Pretty Sammy (Sammy)
1996 - Magical Project S (Sammy)
1996 - Tenchi Muyo in Love (Movie)
1996 - Dual! Parallel Trouble Adventure (Spinoff)
1997 - Daughter of Darkness (Movie)
1997 - Tenchi in Tokyo (Series)
1999 - Tenchi in Love 2 / Tenchi Forever (Movie)
2002 - Tenchi GXP (Series)
2003 - Ryo-Ouki (OVA 3)
2006 - Sasami: Magical Girls Club (Sammy)
2009 - War on Geminar (Spinoff)
2014 - Ai Tenchi Muyo
I may make some changes now.

So GXP doesn't star Tenchi? Is he in it at all? I mean, it is still called Tenchi Muyo.

GXP does not star Tenchi.
It begins based on confusion as to who the new character is (he knows Tenchi, and is found near Tenchi's house, so he's mistakenly believed to be a student of Tenchi's.) Based on Jurai and the Galaxy Police knowing quite a bit about Tenchi, you can understand why Tenchi training someone could bring excitement if they could recruit that person.
Tenchi and everyone else does appear in major roles in one episode, and it's clear it's after OVA3 when they do (with a quick cameo or two elsewhere.)

I also didn't get into various branch timelines Tenchi has.

As an example, in a series of novels the OVAverse goes elsewhere (including introducing Kiyone) and one of the movies is regarding this universe.
In another branch of the OVAverse we get over 20 volumes of manga stories.

Tenchi's creator has also done various novels and self published comics that give us an actual 'ending' for where (in theory at least) the OVA verse will end up (Whether he sticks to this with the reveal of OVA4, who knows.)

I'll say in spoiler text what it is... at least as I recall it-
Tenchi ends up married to all of them as king of Jurai.

I saw Ai once. Not that bad. But hey! I can be useful for once! Let me get this picture I saved. http://imgur.com/SFrqMxK (on Imgur to be safe) I think this is the best chart. Also,
That's how it should be. And how most harem anime should end.
Also I heard some of the extra stuff the creator made was very "obscene"
porn
but it's just what I heard.

It's not a bad chart, but it's always been a touch off, at least in my opinion.

Perhaps the most obvious one is the Mihoshi Special, which if I remember is OVAverse (no clue which specifically though) and it's Mihoshi telling a story from her past, and she places the Tenchi characters in various roles, so the episode itself does count, even if the 'story' she tells may not.

And yes, there is another 'vaguely connected' universe ala Dual that was a hentai OVA. Unlike Dual, which has specific things referenced in it (and gets referenced elsewhere) the OVA (Spaceship Agga Ruter) as far as I'm aware is just a 'Tenchi-like' anime created by the same creator.

Well that's as good as I found without checking wikis. And really? I have heard of that but I forget what it's about. Though it seems the guy who made that also made Battle Programmer Shirase and Photon: The Idiot Adventures. Not connected top Tenchi but it is something made by the same person. Similar to Agga Ruter.
