After Captain Tylor I had a few ideas, but I wrangled another guest since I ended up busy with work a few days earlier than expected.

This time the guest is Logan, who does a lot of subtitling and other work with me at Discotek. And the show he's chosen is... (And much of the prep writing he also ended up doing on his own, so minus some cleaning up and tweaking, this was an easy one for me.)

The Legend of Black Heaven

Pretty tame with a touch of fanservice, some occasional coarse language, and a bit of minor volence here and there.

The series can be watched on the following officially:
Crunchyroll dubbed and subbed

The show is only 13 episodes, so the whole show.

General disclosure. It's a Discotek show. I haven't worked on it. I don't know if Logan did, but any Discotek show has the potential that either of us might end up on it at some point.

Oji Tanaka is a washed-up rocker living a boring life with a wife and son, making a living in middle-management. Fifteen years earlier though, he was "Gabriel", lead guitarist of the heavy metal band "Black Heaven" with his friends. His memories of those glory days are the only thing that keeps him going.

When a beautiful and mysterious woman arrives at his office and urges him to pick up his guitar once more as the key to winning an interstellar war, Oji finds himself on a path that could change his family, his friends, and the very fate of Earth...

Black Heaven is a bit of an odd series, mashing together the office slice-of-life comedy, sci-fi action, and music genres into something that works shockingly well. It's a story that speaks to the wide-eyed dreams everyone has in their younger years and coping with the reality of those lost dreams in one's later years.

The soundtrack is enjoyable and fitting for the assorted genres covered, with an earworm of an opening theme "Cautionary Warning" by guitarist John Sykes, who has played with bands like Thin Lizzy and Whitesnake. Regardless of your language preference, you'll likely find either cast to your liking, although there's a certain infamous flashback scene in Episode 10 that I'd urge viewers check out in the alternate language they are viewing the show in to see just how much better/worse it could be. You'll know the one.

There are a fair number of Digimon connections on both sides of the production, including:
Kae Araki plays Oji's wife Yoshiko and is certainly best known to Digimon fans for playing Hikari Yagami in Digimon Adventure and Digimon Adventure 02.

Yuji Ueda plays Black Heaven's vocalist "Michael" (aka Sato), and played Numemon in Digimon Adventure, along with Dinohyumon in Digimon Frontier: Island of Lost Digimon.

Hidenari Ugaki is Black Heaven's drummer "Luke" (aka Yamada) and would be recognized as Nanomon from Adventure and Wizarmon from Frontier.

Kazuto Nakazawa oversaw character design and animation direction for Black Heaven, which he was an assistant animation director for Digimon Adventure 02 and acted as animation director for Digimon Adventure 02: Revenge of Diaboromon.

On the English side, we have:
Beau Billingslea as Oji, who also played Ogremon, Sagittarimon, and Parrotmon in Digimon, and Leopardmon in Data Squad.

Michelle Ruff as Yoshiko, known for Zoe in Frontier, along with various Digimon including Antylamon, Lopmon, Kazemon, Zephyrmon, and Sparrowmon.

Brianne Siddall plays Oji and Yoshiko's son Gen. Brianne has a long history with Digimon, playing Koromon, Calumon, Kumamon, Korikakumon, and Ignitemon, along with Frontier's Tommy Himi and Data Squad's Keenan Crier.

Tom Fahn as "Michael" (Sato), known for Agumon, Digmon, Submarimon, DemiDevimon, Airdramon, Datamon, Centarumon, and Pteramon, along with an assortment of human characters.

Steve Blum as "Joseph" (aka Watanabe), former keyboardist for Black Heaven. Along with handing ADR scripts for 02, Tamers, and Frontier, he's voiced many Digimon, including Guilmon, Growlmon, WarGrowlmon, Megidramon, Gallantmon, Gigimon, BlackWargreymon, Flamedramon, Raidramon, Magnamon, Beetlemon, MetalKabuterimon, Falcomon, Peckmon, Crowmon, and Ravemon.

I've embedded the shows opening as a preview:

Feel free to post as you wish in this thread. You can post as you are watching, episode by episode, when you finish. Whatever you want. Try and give it a couple days for later spoilers so people have time to try and view stuff without spoilers, while still interacting in the thread (especially if you decide to keep watching past the episode listed as the last one for the leadup.) If you watch one episode and it isn't for you, pop in to explain why. Have fun with it!

A new show/movie will go up each Sunday night (or early on Monday), but feel free to keep talking about older shows in their threads, or even watching past the listed episode.

If you want to chat in the Discord you can.

Hopefully you enjoy. Feel free to make any suggestions or ask an questions regarding the threads or the shows also.

This show was alright, though it wasn't a particular favorite of mine. I don't really have much to say about it, except that I was amused at how none of the songs the band played had lyrics.

It might be easier that way. But that is pretty funny.
