This time we have something really fun!

Kimagure Orange Road!

Some light fanservice warnings on this one, but nothing really notable.

The entire show can be watched on the following officially:
Subbed on Crunchyroll- The link defaults to the movie, underneath that is the OVAs, and beneath that is the show.

For this one we'll do Episodes 1 thru 13 of the TV series. Not a specific reason, as the show doesn't 'quite' have arcs, just a good round number.

This one is subtitled only, and for reasons of general disclosure, this is one I worked on the release quite a bit.

This one I picked because it's just a really good series. Lots of good character material, and you kind of get to see what inspired not just entire genres, but various character elements that are still used.

The show is in no way a harem series, but you can see where the harem series started to grow out of it. You can also see the beginnings of various character traits that became anime defining elements years later (more than a few people seem to think Madoka is what the tsundere personality type is based on, and while I'm not sure I agree, I can see where it doesn't feel completely off.)

The show is based on the Shonen Jump manga of the same time, and after the series, it got a really fantastic finale film. After the film came back they went and did OVAs that take place before the film (and an attempt years later to do a pseudo soft-reboot/sequel ended up not being well recieved, and has basically vanished.)

The story in and of itself is one we all know of to some degree... there's a boy... 2 girls... comedy and drama... and sometimes psychic powers, time travel, and people getting stabbed with guitar picks.

As for major Digimon connections, there are quite a few. I considered throwing in some minor ones because they were fun, but limited myself to just one...

Sukehiro Tomita was the series composer and head writer for Digimon Frontier and the Frontier movie. He was a writer on KOR, and wrote more episodes than anyone except the series composer. The 13 episode block we are going over includes 3 of his episodes.

Katsumi Ito was the sound engineer who did sound effects for Children's War Game and Hurricane Touchdown, which he does for all of KOR also.

Both of the actors who play Kyosuke's friends Komatsu and Hatta show up during Digimon also:
Keiichi Nanba was the Pinochimon who appeared in Xros Wars and Hunters.
Naoki Tatsuta didn't have a large role in Digimon, but he was Ganemon, the 10 yen coin Digimon, in Hunters.

Masami Kikuchi Digimon fans will recognize from to many roles to really go over, including but not limited to... Jou in Adventure, Demon in 02, Grani and Dolphin McCoy in Tamers, Neemon in Frontier, Kurata in Savers, and Damemon in Xros Wars and Hunters. He plays Yuusaku, childhood friend of Hikaru, in love with her, and not willing to forgive Kyosuke for this fact.

Yoshiko Sakakibara is a bit of a smaller one, but kind of interesting. She plays Taichi and Hikari's mom, but 'only' for her handful of lines in the original Adventure movie. She does similiar here as she plays the rarely heard mother of Madoka.

And last but not least...
Chika Sakamoto has plenty of roles in Digimon, but everyone would know her as the voice of Agumon and his various evolutions (plus Dingo, the digidestiny of Australia!) She plays Kazuya, the shall we say precocious, couson of Kyosuke who shows up to cause trouble, body swap, and generally ruin Kyosuke's day. (Although I don't believe Kazuya shows up in this block of episodes...)

I've embedded a Youtube clip of the first opening to the series as a bit of a preview.

Feel free to post as you wish in this thread. You can post as you are watching, episode by episode, when you finish. Whatever you want. Try and give it a couple days for later spoilers so people have time to try and view stuff without spoilers, while still interacting in the thread (especially if you decide to keep watching past the episode listed as the last one for the leadup.) If you watch one episode and it isn't for you, pop in to explain why. Have fun with it!

A new show/movie will go up each Sunday night (or early on Monday), but feel free to keep talking about older shows in their threads, or even watching past the listed episode.

If you want to chat in the Discord you can.

Hopefully you enjoy. Feel free to make any suggestions or ask an questions regarding the threads or the shows also.

Last night I watched the first episode of this. Maybe the show will grow on me, but right now it's just kind of odd. Anyway, I'm posting now because initially I forgot that I still had a Crunchyroll membership, so I experienced firsthand how much the site's commercials suck. I have a pair of guest passes for whoever wants them (first come, first serve).

Finished episode 13 tonight. If I'm being honest, I wasn't too crazy about this anime. Romance never interests me much, and the show isn't particularly funny except for occasional rare moments. There are really two premises to it, the primary one being the double romance angle, while the secondary element about psychic powers seems rather like a tacked-on afterthought, which gives the show a somewhat incohesive feel. I can't say I really connected with any of the characters much. The protagonist, while not consistently annoying like his two male classmates, is a little too spineless to be fully likeable. Usually when he'd have one of his frequent "gee, I suck" soliloquies I'd be like, "Yeah, that's a fair assessment." All that being said, the show wasn't terrible. I'll probably finish it eventually, but for now I'm fine with moving on to something else.
