Playing under the rules that I couldn't drastically change the series and the general outline would need to be the same...

1. Just write out the 02 kids. Say they're visiting Willis, they're all studying abroad. There are several ways to have them not show up even if it's dumb that wouldn't have you wondering why nobody is worried they are missing.

2. Streamline/cut down on Meiko's arc specifically in Coexistance. I was fully on board with her character, especially in Loss where she starts to develop more, but Coexistance she really spins her wheels and the movie stops several times so everyone can have the same conversation reassuring her, only for her to suddenly decide a mercy kill is the only option. Having her become determined to save Meicoomon but slowly realize that defeating her is the only way would have been much more interesting.

3. Use some of the nostalgia for actual emotional impact - What did Joe and Mimi feel seeing Leomon die again? Instead of having TK being scared of losing Patamon, how does he feel about possibly losing him a second time? What if TK and Angemon were able to beat the Devimon clone without any casualties and come out stronger for it? Tri had several callbacks to Adventure that were just callbacks, there's so much room to make those moments so interesting.

4. Have the battles in Future be mostly at least Ultimate level Digimon if not straight to Megas. This was the first movie where all eight Digimon and their partners were at full strength and I was excited to see their first battle together as Megas, but they got tossed to the side and we instead got battles with Champion levels who we've seen from the beginning.

5. On a mild note, as much as I like Johnny Yong Bosch as TK, he would have fit Matt much better than Vic did, I would have switched the two roles.

...And for the love of God let digivolution to MetalGarurumon happen at least once by himself somewhere in the six movies.

Or, the main cast could so easily have just been worried about the 02 kids. That's the #1 thing I'd change. Each movie, spend a couple of minutes trying another way to contact them, get gradually more worried, and later on start to suspect having been lied to. Some "did we just kill Imperialdramon?" would be good too!

I've been thinking about this, and in Part 1, when Tai is talking to Izzy about inviting people to his football game, there could be a line about iviting Davis or Yolei, and he could just casually say he hasn't seen them around lately. Then when they go to see Daigo, he can mention they have the 02 team investigating the Digital World, and they need the OGs to stay in the real world as a line of defense.

I dunno if I'd keep Imperialdramon. It conflicts too much with the fact that they're so reluctant to fight Meicoomon. So even if you did add them fretting over defending themselves (which would clutter the main conflict of Joe stepping up), it takes away from later themes. I think you'd just have to change the Digimon, but you could still keep the Emperor disguise (and make it actually Ken's body).

Then obviously add a bit more frustration, concern, and urgency towards the fact that they saw Ken. Maybe even some more contempt towards Daigo and Maki. It would also complement the main story. They're so concerned over saving their friends, they don't notice anything is wrong with the Digimon and TK.

The only bit that's really tricky to fix is the part at the end of Part 3 where they grow depressed and disaffected. That makes sense if the only thing at stake was their relationship with their Digimon; they're temporarily resigned to letting go of that part of their lives. (I think that's why Tri sometimes felt off, as it chose to avoid focusing on a sense of urgency, so they could retain a slice of life tone.)

But giving up on finding their friends is kinda crappy. By best fix would be if the adults say their agents will deal with it, and the kids are no use now that their Digimon partner links are severed, and they feel completely like they've been cut adrift. Then when they finally decide to leap into the DW again, you can have a cool moment where Daigo goes above his superior's heads to do right by the kids.

After that, they can maybe mention during Part 4 or 5, that they should look for the others, but they really don't know where to start. The rest works from there, since they're pre-occupied with the immediate danger of the Digital World, MM, Dark Masters and Ordinemon.

Right, better to swap out Imperialdramon (because the "defending themselves reluctantly against a partner gone bad" thing is Meicoomon's theme and there's no need to cheapen it here), and make them be worried about meeting someone who looked like Ken.

A few months ago, when everyone was still processing the finale and we were all mislead by Omegamon Merciful Mode apparently trying to make "mercy killing" the point of the series (that Watanabe interview is astonishingly relevant), I had the idea that Imperialdramon could work, and quite well, in the context of madness and execution. Not the way it was implemented, but within a progression. Given that one of the main plot elements is effectively MaiCoomon's Digimon-rabies, the Chosen, who with all their Megas effectively serve as one of the Powers That Be, could easily be forced into the position of executioner, and the conflict could be throwing newer and more significant victims their way. The progression I had in mind was Mugendramon and Seadramon, then Imperialdramon (throw Ogremon in either before or after), and finally MaiCoomon, which would graduate the drama from slaying former enemies to slaying former friends to slaying current friends.

Going into more detail would require an "Alternative tri. Plots" thread in the fanfic section, probably.

Give Holydramon more screentime and more action. Like some real fighting..Clawing, biting and more fire from the holy flame.

Reunion:
The Digimon evolve into their Perfect levels while fighting Alphamon.

Determination:
02 kids are mentioned on the Hot Springs trip - someone tells Meiko that there are other Chosen Children but they're unavailable due to reasons, which are specific to each of them. Like Daisuke's at a football thing, Ken's abroad studying, etc. Something to make it clear they're not expected to be around.
When fighting Imperialdramon in Determination, have someone exposit that it can't be their friend as Jogress has been impossible since the end of 2002 with the return of Tailmon's Holy Ring and they returned Quinlongmon's power in order to help stabilise the Digital World.

Confession:
02 kids mentioned whereabouts on the Hot Springs trip are thrown in Maki's face by Daigo, making it clear their reasons for being absent are a government coverup.
Maki says Ken provided his D-3 to help when she turns up with it, showing she's still obfuscating his condition.

Loss:
Replace Mugendramon and Metalseadramon with RustTyrannomon and Aegisdramon, so it's not the return of the Dark Masters as glorified cameos.
We see all the Harmonious Ones evolve from Perfect to Ultimate
The Mysterious Man makes a comment about if only Alphamon was available, explicitly tying Alphamon to Yggdrasil's faction

Coexistence:
Tailmon reverts back to Plotmon as her standard form, showing the continued effect of the Reboot.
Alphamon doesn't disappear from the plot, Ophanimon: Falldown Mode kills him, then turns on Jesmon, who flees, injured by the stressful battle. Then the Fusion to Ordinemon happens.

Our Future:
With Plotmon's appearance in Loss, Tailmon turning up in Ordinemon's mind is a hint about Meicoomon having everyone's memories.
Devimon evolves into NeoDevimon when he arrives, to explain why he and HolyAngemon have an even fight. And more of their fight is shown.
Garudamon, Lilimon and Zudomon are used against Ordinemon instead of Birdramon, Togemon and Ikkakumon. WereGarurumon got to turn up, why can't they.
Tailmon's flashbacks also feature the Hikarigoaka incident - showing that the Greymon then was split into Taichi and Hikari's partners.
No Merciful Mode, instead every partner Digimon individually gets to attack - and the final blow is all of them together.

Those all sound like pretty great tweaks to me. Especially Ophanimon dealing with Alphamon.
Rather than Kari being in a weird trance, she straight up just loses it and gets Ophanimon to go beast mode.

Though I just straight up wouldn't have used Imperialdramon for movie 2.
And I'm cool with Seadramon and Machinedramon showing up, just would have liked them to have more personality rather than being mindless and silent.

Yeah. I can agree with a lot of that. It's some pretty good changes.

Well, Ophanimon was never going to appear in her main form in these movies. Holydramon has been established as being canon for Adventure before Ophanimon was created.

I want to start saying that I loved the movies, TOEI could have just moved on but they decided (with partners) to give us a closure of what we have always loved. Unfortunately IMO it failed to give any conclusions at all. Man I loved, REALLY loved how it all began until the reset. From there on I sadly felt this was a fill-in in a Digimon story. I am not satisfied with the end product, but I am not mad at all, I am happy as hell of seeing all characters I love once again. I will give my liver if they made another 6 chapter that goes nowhere.

But because they won't, I was expecting so many closures that did not happen, that disappointed me in the end. Loved it, but I'm just frustrated because it could have been so much better !!

This, tri was completely lacking compared to regular seasons of digimon in term of plot and fighting/action. Like I could do without 15 minutes of cooking, 10 minutes of eating, 5 minutes of people looking glum while cicadas croaked in the background. I skipped through the talking scenes and just started the play again at fighting scenes and still understood everything that happened.

Let someone work out a script for someone who really knows the show.

As mentioned:

Edit background around children from 02. What they did with them was really pitiful. Even if only a mention was made that they had gone to the Digital World some time ago and Taichi and others had lost contact with them, it would have been better than what we had seen. We could add a few more words about futile attempts to contact and worry about them.

Better process and explain reboot. Why did Piyomon change its nature? The conflict between her and Sora was completely different.

Please, though I like Yggy, throw him out of the Tri. It works very cheesy. Especially with regard to materials around the series. Instead, pay more attention to Eniac. Or explain what happened to him. Okay, so Homestasis with Yggy is playing and Eniac drinks coffee somewhere in the background. A lot of fans upset this fact. Just because all the time the kids knew about the existence of the Digital World, they were not even told about Yggdrasill. And one thing is and wants to wipe out humanity. Please work with Eniac or pay more attention to Yggy. And explain his presence more than just being, and it's a crazy killing AI. So, either you accept the set concept or explain it.

Y'know what? I wouldn't change a thing. :)

Okay, for realsies though; I enjoyed tri a lot. At the moment it ranks second overall in my favourites, right behind Adventure itself. The story was fine, and to me the character development and deconstruction of each of the kids' roles and traits - or rather, their crests - clearly showed how well the writers understood the original show. All in all, the thing I enjoyed most was, I guess, the most heavily advertised aspect of seeing our old favourites again and how they've (almost!) grown up with us.

As much as I roll my eyes every time the 02 kids are brought up - because, as someone who was frustrated with the frequent and very blatant nerfing of the '99 crew in favour of the new kids in 02, it's funny to me how now people like those characters - or wonder if I watched the same film as everyone else when DigiTwitter collectively flipped its lid after Part 5? I will admit, tri. isn't perfect by any means, and there are some aspects I would tweak.

Let's start with Daisuke and Co. since they're the most popular point of contention. In retrospect, from all the marketing and trailers and stuff leading up to Part 1, it was clear as day that the focus of this story was always going to be on the '99 kids, and Meiko, and their partner Digimon, and a mysterious pair of adults. That's a lot of characters, and I don't see how the films would have benefited from the 02 cast playing a major role; if anything tri. would have been more rushed and convoluted with them appearing as spotlight stealing central characters. With that said, I don't think writing them out altogether would have been ideal as that would have made people more upset, but I also don't need Daisuke and Co. being constantly name dropped and the '99 kids wondering out loud where they are every five seconds. More foreshadowing of what we eventually saw of them in Part 6 might have quelled peoples' frustrations, but that's really all I would change about their role.

Part 2's final battle was fine and I have no issue with Imperialdramon being featured but the whole setup of 'it takes place in this safe and convenient space that only two of the partner Digimon can get into and everyone else is locked out, and because it exclusively takes place in this safe and convenient space there are no real world consequences'... well, my point being that it was a bit of a cop out, and admittedly this may be why I view Part 2 less favourably compared to the rest of tri.

Part 4's battle against Mugendramon is something else I would have tweaked. Watching the three Megas ganging up on him was fun - after sitting through all those lengthy evolution sequences - but the fact that it's specifically HerculesKabuterimon and Seraphimon joining the fight feels like they were thrown in to compensate for Hercs not showing off his special attack in Part 3, and Seraph being absent from that film. Hououmon turning Mugendramon into molten slag all by herself would have been much more effective, both as a display of her power and as a conclusion to Sora and Piyomon's arc in this film. Seraphimon should have been saved for Part 6, which would have kept the tradition of Patamon's forms showing up late and being a beacon of hope against the darkness and such.

In Part 6 Gennai is clearly shown as a silhouette in one of the tubes with the 02 gang. But despite this, no mention of him is made whatsoever, and as a result there's still confusion - especially in the dub script - over the identity of the Mysterious Man. That's all well and good when he's messing with the characters and the audience, but when the real Gennai is right there in what amounts to a blink-and-you'll-miss-it cameo and isn't even mentioned by name? No wonder people are confused!

Finally, for now: while I don't mind the absence of Warp Evolutions, they should have used one for Agumon before he joins the final battle.

Currently, I shack up in Wyoming. It sucks
While I agree with wildwing on 02 characters maybe being overkill if they were in it, I honestly half expected Davis and Co to join the final fight, though it may have been undeserved for them. (I just wanted to see my boy Veemon to be honest.) But after reading the aforementioned post, I can see why that would be an issue, and I'm hoping Last Evolution can manage to balance 01 and 02 Digi-Destined well.

So I have a post here from about a year and a half ago. Well, last night I watched part 5 again. I was supposed to watch part 5 and part 6 together, but couldn't go through with it. I'll be watching Part 6 later today.

Anyway. There was so much nitpicking I had with the plot. But it all stems from one source. The need for the plot to be mysterious. How would I change Tri? Half of the mystery would be gone.

Hackmon has answers. Those answers need to be told to the Chosen as early as PART 2. The reason is because they have been in world threatening scenarios before and the SMART thing to do is to make sure they are aware of what's going on. There is 0 reason to appear before Daigo and Meiko's father. Their relevance is minuscule. And pretty much everyone is aware of that.

These kids aren't as naive as portrayed. In some ways their naivety is worst than the Devimon arc. At least then they realized their Digivices were needed to stop the growing darkness, and at the time a nice counter to Devimon's powers. Here, they are clueless.

The only chosen whose plot was actually related to the problems at hand was Hikari's plot with homeostasis. Rejecting Homestasis' judgment is HUGE. But everything revolving around that plot is short.

The battle animations were terrible. I have no idea how I liked them the first time I watched this movie. 1. There's no weight to anything. It felt like watching a Smash Brothers Brawl fight. 2. Way too many still frames. I get that this is probably where the money is put into it, but maybe have it be 5 movies if that's going to help the animation.

Tri for me is kind of a "death of a thousand cuts" situation. I can't point at any one thing and say its the source of all the problems, but rather a massive amount of smaller issues pile up and make the whole thing exhausting to watch. I've seen it twice and don't feel any desire to do it again. I think it has good core concepts, like the Chosen Children having to perform a mercy killing on someone's berserk partner, but the six films format was a pacing disaster imo. Making it a proper short TV series or even a webseries feels like it would have been a big step in the right direction.

I will preface this by saying I am still glad Tri exists and appreciate them attempting something different within the franchise even if it was mediocre at best. It was almost like watching this series captured the feeling for me of frustration, mixed feelings, and make it-up as you go that becoming an adult has at times on a meta level. At any rate let us begin...

Personally I felt like there was just alot of fat in the movies that could have been trimmed out... Scenes or characters where you built up an expectation that it could amount to something only to flop out or have no weight behind the resolution.

For example the whole reboot/digimon losing their memories thing seemed to only exist to be like "yo remember this stuff from the original series?" Pointless dark masters, the original crew bond back with their digimon and get all their bonds and digivolutions back at record pace.

Also in this vein I felt like there were so many fight situations that amounted to "yo watch me fully digivolve" to get wiped back out immediately and then fully digivolve again a few scenes later. I get that they are master tamers but it removed the entire impact of digivolutions and in many cases removed all sense of power gauging for me. Another tie in to this would be situations where they make a big deal about a digivolution for it to essentially do nothing (a la Magnadramon).

I guess it seems like it boils down as others have said to a lack of clear vision as well as it being stretched across a number of movies with the repeating scenarios and fight scenes lacking impact. I mean I'm all for character drama and deeper darker stories but it seemed like they were not sure what to go for and just tried to glue everything into the movies to please everyone. It was almost like they couldn't decide between a character drama, a Shonen fight story, and a Kaiju movie and kept changing their minds as they went rather than just being one or all of those at all times.

Maybe if they were forced to tell the story within one full length movie they would have made clearer choices and had less waste?
