Hookmon Preview for Booster Set 8

The Digimon Card Game Twitter has updated with a card preview from Booster Set 8 New Hero. This time it's Hookmon.

Hookmon gets featured very nicely on his card hanging onto some rope, and it appears he's in a battle against Octomon, who has a treasure chest he's protecting (or in the midst of stealing.)

Glad to see Hookmon, that's a mon I've been voting for in the surveys that I wanted to see get added to the card game. Monmon's my favorite rookie, and dw3 is my favorite Digimon game. That being said, he doesn't synergize with Monmon (and Monmon's still pretty bad).

I kind of wish Hookmon's effect was more unique, such as specifically removing lvl 3s from a Digimon's evolution sources. If it targeted lvl 3 sources specifically then it'd have a lot better synergy with black cards (devolving a lvl 4 mon will just delete it if it has a lvl 2 source and yet no lvl 3 sources).

Just glad to see him get recognition though, and great art.

that a kinda funny choice, I would have thought Hookmon fans would prefer Hookmon -> Assaultmon -> Cannondramon or Hookmon -> Captain Hookmon -> Voltobautamon or AvengeKidmon

Yeah, those are fair enough too. I'm not a single line kind of guy and the idea of Hookmon also becoming Piranimon kinda won me over Pendulum Z very strongly suggests it to be a possibility, if not directly atleast as a jogress between Hookmon and a Fish Digimon. Design-wise it makes pretty good sense. We also have dragon forms for angel digimon, so a Fish form for a pirate doesn't seem that odd.

So it is a straight improvement of ST2 Garurumon with the same costs and even higher DP, plus the double color (and Mojyamon was already a better version of that card). The only reason you would still play the ST2 card is that there are some effects that have synergy with the name Garurumon.

Anyway the art is really good and I love the reference to Octmon's card.

Regarding the lines: A Hookmon > Piranimon > Metal Piranimon digivolution line wouldn't be that odd. Voltobautamon and AvengeKidmon just feel too 'landlubbery' and dark to me. The aquatic (and somewhat goofy) theme, and the hook, are some of the interesting design-cues, in my opinion.

The idea behind CaptainHookmon > AvengeKidmon is that CaptainHookmon was defeated by MagnaKidmon, and evolved to AvengeKidmon out of desire of revenge, as mentioned in its profile. Nevertheless, it's more of a dark evolution instead of a natural one.
