Inklings have been popping up even before the confusion with Drummond, but as more information has shown up it seems a good time to make a post...

Thanks to a casting notice, and confirmation from various people around LA in the dubbing scene, an English dub for Ghost Game has entered pre-production recently. The anonymized title for production being passed around, even though a number of people have been 'told' it is Ghost Game, is DGMNGG.

It appears the plan is to be lower budget than a few recent Digimon dubs, and combined with the Adventure: dub may provide a decent reason why Toei and Bandai aren't rushing into a new anime TV series, or rushing the Adventure: dub to start.

They'll have 130+ English dubbed episodes to air over a decent period in one of the biggest money-making regions for the franchise, when no new show is running. To say nothing of the upcoming 02 movie.

This is very early days for the dubbing though, so we'll see where it goes.

Holy crap! This is the LAST season I expected to get an english dub because of how dark and violent it gets sometimes! This is great news! Even if it's probably gonna be censored a lot

I'm not sure that's guaranteed. You'd want to censor a show like this if you plan on marketing it toward kids, but that's easier said than done nowadays. Think about it, Toei has taken nearly 3 years to get Adventure 2020 out there. If they've struggled that much to find a home for that series, I can't see why they'd have an easier time selling Ghost Game. The fact that this is a non-union production being done by a studio that has no history dubbing anime into English suggests they aren't expecting huge things.

Generally speaking, Toei doesn't produce edited dubs anymore either. Things like Dragon Quest, World Trigger, One Piece, Kizuna, and Tri are all uncut. Though, the first did get an edited version made for BBC's kids' service, which might be something we see if the new Digimon shows ever land a kids partner.

I wonder if Ginkakumon gets to stay a sake drinker or if our boy just really like flavored beverages

What do you mean by lower-budget dubbing?

How can one series' dub be cheaper than another?

Is Toei using a cheaper studio than it normally gets?

I'm curious what direction they'll go with the dub. Ghost Game is pretty tame for a typical horror anime, but perhaps a bit too intense for American kids, so I wonder if maybe they'll market it a little older than the Japanese version.

In any event, while I have many, many issues with Ghost Game, having an new Digimon series dubbed in English is always good for the health of the franchise as a whole, so I'm happy to see it.

Hurray. Gives me hope that they drop all 67 of the reboot at once then do GG very soon.

This is pretty hype. Potential censorship and "quality" issues aside i am surprised this is happening or at least confirmed so soon.

Tbf the 2020 dub was first announced shortly after it ended in Japan. Just has taken 4000 years to actually air.

That lady's earlier tweets has her looking for a "Japanese to English adaption specialist for an upcoming animated series". If that's to do with Digimon too that could mean adapting like the earlier dubs? Would be kinda funny if they all use localised names after the card game didn't.

If they do go the "adaptation" route, I'm placing bets on Ruli being changed to Julie. You heard it here first.

Ghost Game will probably be marketed to teens and adults while the reboot will be marketed towards children.

I prefer lower budget company so we can have newer voice actors or even fans try for the role!

I wished it wasnt just people in the LA area though...other people should have a chance too

It's definitely not getting marketed to adults. GG was still said to be focused on kids and middle schoolers according to the series composer himself and I don't think Toei/Bandai would shift markets on that overseas. Plus, I don't think GG would really appeal to adults on a scale that would warrant a shift in audience, there are things that adults can enjoy about it, but the show as a whole doesn't have enough depth to keep them fully invested.
