Lots to go over with this one!

The Digimon Adventure 20th Anniversary Memorial Story Project was announced as a crowdfunding campaign almost a month ago.

With the crowdfunding beginning on August 22nd, the project page has gone live on Campfire, the Japanese crowdfunding project it will be run thru.

There are a lot of details here. Translations will be cleaned up and expanded as time allows.

The Digimon Adventure 20th Anniversary Memorial Story Project is a 'limited time fan club' done thru crowdfunding to further elevate the 20th Anniversary celebration.

It will run August 22nd thru October 2nd

The target goal is 10,000,000 yen (about $94,000)

Image Thumbnail (custom)

The focus of the project are special movies that depicts the daily life of the adult characters and their Digimon that couldn't be fit into Last Evolution Kizuna.

Kenji Watanabe and Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru have participated in the special items for this project.

There are messages to fans from Hiromi Seki and Yosuke Kinoshita.

Update- We have translations of these thanks to onkei. Various translations have been cleaned up and updated throughout the article.

From: Hiromi Seki (first producer of the Digimon series)
I suppose this is how a parent must feel when their child has graduated into adulthood-- a sort of relief.
Since I don't have children, I can only imagine that feeling, but I have a deep sense of emotion over watching [the Digimon series] grow into such a grand presence. I'd like to extend my gratitude to the supporters around them when they were in elementary school, middle school, high school, university, and as full-fledged adults.

During those times when things went well and when they didn't, when they were fighting and when they were closely working together, when they had to overcome countless painful experiences; there were many hands that extended out to offer them aid, and I do not wish for them to ever, not even in the future, forget the feelings that were held in those hands. I pray that, of course the staff and cast that were involved with them, as well as all of the fans who change shape and spread throughout, have lives like their full of much good fortune waiting for them!
Even if they've reached adulthood, the life that lies ahead for them is still long. As one of their parents, I would like to leave that thought with them. For the future that's ahead, the adventure keeps evolving!

From: Yosuke Kinoshita (producer for movie "Digimon Adventure LAST EVOLUTION Kizuna")
The '20th anniversary' started off in March. There were times when people would tell me 'Digimon is amazing.' I felt that for myself in the 2017 Fes during the big chorus for "Butter-Fly." I saw all of the fans singing it aloud with their eyes shining. That sight touched my heart to the point that tears came to my eyes. Although that sight was limited to the Fes, there are Digimon fans throughout the world. And I am one of them. I would always ask myself 'What can I do to unite all hearts as one like that time?" before doing something.

'What can I do to have everyone get excited together for the 20th anniversary?'

I believe that this project is one of those chances for everyone to get excited together. I think it would be impossible during a normal anime production, but while I thought that it would be something that the cast, staff, and my seniors would say no to, everyone surprisingly gave their ready consent when I discussed it with them.

This is an amazing thing. And it's all because everyone loves Digimon. It's because we want to send our thanks to the "children" who have traveled along with us for these past 20 years.

Doing something that hasn't been done before is unsettling. But immediately I changed my mind to think that, since it's Digimon and everyone that is involved, it will be okay. I think that "Digimon Adventure" is a series that has grown along with all of the fans. I would be extremely happy if you also brought up this project together as well.

The latest work will depict the various experiences that the generation goes through as they become adults, while overlapping the transformations of the relationships between appearing characters and their Digimon. However, what could not be depicted in the movie has been made into the spin-off short stories, Memorial Stories, that this project will be producing.

As you would already been aware from previous announcements, the "02" characters will also be appearing and we-- including the voice cast, of course, as well as a work that was produced by Producer Seki, special character designs by Kenji Watanabe, etc-- are putting our heart and soul into creating it. There will be side stories and a prequel of the movie, and I'm sure that if you watch them, you will have a more in-depth experience for the movie.

"Digimon 20th Memorial Stories" is planned to be special short animations of side stories showing the everyday lives of the adult children and Digimon, and a prequel to the movie 'Digimon Adventure Last Evolution Kizuna' that couldn't be fit into the movie itself.

Image Thumbnail (custom)

These memorial stories can be viewed in the theater room as a purchase benefit at the LB Pop-Up Theater, which will open in late November, for those who want to watch these as soon as possible.

They also mention there will be no general release for the 5 episodes minus the screenings at the LB Pop-Up Theater screenings, and one other exception- The first episode will be released online.

The Memorial Story chapter titles are:
1- 'To Sora' or 'To the Sky' (the text allows either... or both, to be potentially accurate.)
2- 'Hole in the Heart'
3- 'Medical Student, Jou Kido'
4- 'The Coveted Jogress Evolution'
5- {Secret Title}

Each of these 5 episodes are about 5 minutes long.
They note the episode titles may not be final. Episode number and details may also change.

Introduction of the items those who participate can get. These are all sample images, and may not represent what the final items look like.

Image Thumbnail (custom)

Image Thumbnail (custom)

Post-recording script and storyboard book- This includes a post-recording script and a storyboard book (they note that the storyboards will be copies, and it isn't noted if these are comprehensive, but all 5 episodes are mentioned. Also, the stand in for the storyboard book are clearly storyboards from Children's War Game.)

Image Thumbnail (custom)

Last Evolution Kizuna screening- You'll be able to go to a special advance screening of Last Evolution Kizuna. The screening will include a talk show with guests. The screening is scheduled for February 2nd and will be at a currently undecided theater in Tokyo.

*Copyright and other rights will not be given to the character.

Image Thumbnail (custom)

Digimon Adventure, which was born in 1999, is a work that shows the process of eight chosen children and their partner Digimon joining together and growing thru adventures and battles.

Image Thumbnail (custom)
Image Thumbnail (custom)

The "Digimon" anime has developed in many different series, but I think that the unique trait about "Digimon Adventure" is that "the characters age." In many cases, the characters in anime aren't shown to age. However, in "Digimon Adventure," Taichi, Yamato, Sora, and everyone all grow up from children into adults. When the series first began, they were in elementary school, but in the latest work, they've become 22-year-old adults.

Image Thumbnail (custom)

All of the Chosen Children are at that age where they're just one step short of being adults, but in real society, it's the time period when they go out into the world from students to working adults, and their relationships with family, friends, and their own community has major changes. They no longer need the support of their parents, and their relationships with old friends grow vaguely awkward. It's a time period that everyone experiences.

Image Thumbnail (custom)

"Digimon Adventure" is a series that, since the beginning, has introduced social problems in its story, while spinning a tale that acts in tandem with real society. The fans who had grown up along with them and cheered on the Digimon even now as adults, have gone through the same changes as Taichi and the children. I'm sure there are many who are heading now to a new life stage of career change, marriage, and raising children.

Please consider the lives of the Chosen Children and your own and how they may intertwine.

I think that Digimon Adventure has grown together with it's fans.

-Producer Yosuke Kinoshita

A few hours ago they updated the page and social media with a basic rewards chart.

Image Thumbnail (custom)

Thanks to onkei we have a translated version of that chart on top of the list form above.

Campfire is 'all or nothing' ala Kickstarter, so if it doesn't reach the goal, nothing will be charged.

Some of the other Q&A content they have listed:
There will be no general sales of these crowdfunding items.
You can do multiple levels if you want.
This will be done only for those living in Japan.
The Memorial Story will be released as planned even if the crowdfunding doesn't succeed. They don't clarify the exact details, but it's likely referring to the 1 episode online and all 5 at the Limited Base Pop-Up Theater (and possibly other future events.)

Lots of interesting things for this, although nearly all of us are in the position of it being rather hard to get any of this if we really want to..

Update- Thanks to onkei for some updated translations, including on the interviews. Some additional bits may be cleaned up later.

This is a bit more complicated in some ways than prior items, but if you want to try.... Here is the Campfire page for the project again.

You'll want to contact an intermediary to get these items sent to you. WtW is not affiliated with any, but here are a selection of intermediaries that have worked well for various WtWers and their friends in the past:
From Japan
Rider Proxy
Nippon-Yasan

You'll want to provide your chosen intermediary with the link to the item. Just copy paste the links to the product pages for what you want and send them a message about it and they'll take care of it after they discuss pricing and their policies with you. The link embedded in the news article for the product items are exactly what you'll need to send them.

Some of the intermediaries have a full storefront and may have the item listed, so you may want to check that first. Be aware that due to the added complexities of dealing with a crowdfunding project, intermediaries may also not be willing to deal with it.

My main thought is if this "partner Digimon" would become a canon species, but probably not. I would just make a fourth Sistermon if it were me lol. Or some sort of evolution to an old Digimon like Drimogemon or something.

and by "dubbing", I'm assuming it doesn't mean the actual English dub but rather someone Japanese being in background sound for the OG version?

also that mini OVA episode about "jogress" takes my fancy. I wonder if that'll be a new jogress, or just like... Shakkoumon and Silphymon killing a random mook or something.

Everything you were wondering about is literally answered above...its not going to be a canon digimon.

I am really interested if the jogress episode will have a new evolution but... I dont even know how we will ever get a chance to see these.

"*Copyright and other rights will not be given to the character" could be interpreted in several ways, but the most obvious interpretation does suggest it won't become an official Digimon.

The most obvious interpretation of that to me is that the person doesn't gain any rights to the character and those rights stay with Bandai and/or Toei and/or another affiliated company.

Whether they are ever used or not.

In more fun discussion...

There are a number of those items that I really want...

So unfortunately the fans from overseas won't get to watch the special episodes? (except the first episode that'll release online)
And did they mention when they'll release it online?

Am I the only one that feels this is completely superflous and unnecessary?

Twelve out of thirteen* Adventure kids and their Digimon are being crammed into what will be, at minimum, a 1hr 30m film. Inevitably this means some characters are going to get more screentime while others end up getting the short end of the stick. Not to mention it's already looking to be very Taichi and Agumon centric.

So, on the contrary, I think these are absolutely necessary if we want everybody to get a decent amount of screentime.

*Number 13 being Meiko, of course. But we don't know if she'll end up appearing in Kizuna too.

If only I would like to make a crowdfunding to put forward the Digimon Tamers 2018 sequel Konaka was willing to make.

Speaking of which, am I the only one who feels that using a special anniversary Drama CD as a poorly disguised sequel pitch was not only superfluous and unnecessary, but also a slap in the face to the fans?

That reward tier where you get an original Partner Digimon designed is so coollllll! I really hope it reaches the funding goal so those shorts stand a chance a better chance of getting subtitled.

Fourteen out of fifteen* Adventure kids and their Digimon are being crammed into what will be, at minimum, a 1hr 30m film. Inevitably this means some characters are going to get more screentime while others end up getting the short end of the stick. There are a lot of aspects to conssider here:

1. How are you so sure that the 02 characters are going to show up in this? I mean they don't even appear in the promo poster. Furthermore, not to mention they had already literally 6 films in which half of the time were slice-of-life scenes, which is what this animation is about.

2. I feel really 'off' that Adventure being by far the richest part of the franchise needs a crowdfunding to do something that it's not going to add anything relevant to the plot itself. Don't expect this to be nothing more nothing less than the Digimon Adventure 3D Grandprix film or that tri. CD Drama settled in the beach which was included in the DigiFes 2016 compilation.

3. I just hope they don't make the mistake of focusing all the plot into Taichi & Agumon. One of my biggest complains about Our War Game! OVA is the fact that half of the cast is just sidelined because reasons...and that feels shabby to be honest. I would rather prefer if they follow the Diablomon Strikes Back! OVA formula in which every characters gets kinda of a decent amount of screentime.

Why would you say so? Literally I cannot see why it would be. I think it's just a matter of making the most of your available resources considering Tamers is not that as popular as Adventure. Kind reminder that Digimon Adventure anime was a follow-up of a Digimon Adventure kinda pilot-OVA that turned out to be succesful when Digimon was only a V-Pet thing.

The Blu-rays are pretty low on the reward scale so after the fundraiser is over there will be plenty of them floating around, so you don't have to worry about that.
If you mean some sort of dub... then in that case I wouldn't be surprised if whoever releases Kizuna in the west could include the shorts with the movie as bonus material. After all they do, so far, seem to keep the west out of this event which also means that a regular release over here wouldn't really impact the "limited" status of the animations in Japan.

Kind reminder that Digimon Adventure anime was a follow-up of a Digimon Adventure kinda pilot-OVA that turned out to be succesful when Digimon was only a V-Pet thing.
That is completely wrong. The Digimon Adventure movie was produced at the same time as the as the TV Anime, which aired its first episode only days after the movie premiered. So the implication that any success of that screening caused Adventure to be produced is misleading unless you also want to imply that the series was planned, cast and started pumping out episodes within a single day.

I'm aware of that and of course it's just my assumption of things, but we may suppose if that OVA hadn't been that vastly successful, there's a chance the anime would have been different (shorter or who knows). If not, I don't see the point of having an introductory OVA right a day before the anime première. I mean, at least that's how things usually work in that business. Even though, there are many other examples of this among the franchise. For instance the Re: Digitize/Decode case.

That one of them has jogress in the title is of course, not a guarantee of who shows up, but it's certainly a hint. Takeru and Hikari both had jogress' of course, but those were aspects that each required one of the 02 kids. So it could certainly 'focus' on those 2, but at least an appearance of Miyako and Iori in such stories would be required for them to be fleshed out, even as shorts.

Crowdfunding is the umbrella term for the concept, but there really isn't crowdfunding being done here 'in general'. The shorts have been made for their desired goal. Spend a bit extra, and have shorts to show at a special event, and possibly some other events in the future. The crowdfunding is effectively being done akin to a 'this is the 20th Anniversary, and it'd be nice if we did a bit more with them, here is the budget we've set forth to do so', which is the crowdfunding aspect.

And of course, they said from moment one they are shorts and side stories. If you have unrealistic expectations of what they are, that's on you.

3. I just hope they don't make the mistake of focusing all the plot into Taichi & Agumon. One of my biggest complains about Our War Game! You can keep calling the films OVAs, but they aren't. They are significantly different things in production, usage, budget, etc. In recent years that's definitely become slightly more muddled, but there is no confusion on what any of the things you've named are.

As for which method works better, I'd say War Game worked better in telling an actual story and having characterization, which is one of the benefits of sidelining out characters. It isn't perfect, and the Diablomon method is certainly another way to go.

As theigno already points out, it wasn't in any way shape or form a pilot (and already went over OVAs.) The show was being made, and nothing about the film's launch was going to change that.

The Blu-rays are pretty low on the reward scale so after the fundraiser is over there will be plenty of them floating around, so you don't have to worry about that.

I tend to agree that it's good to hope for them. This sort of extra animation historically is very up or down whether we get it. Any educated guess at this point is no better than a coin flip.

I'm aware of that and of course it's just my assumption of things, but we may suppose if that OVA hadn't been that vastly successful, there's a chance the anime would have been different (shorter or who knows). Even though, there are many other examples of this among the franchise. For instance the Re: Digitize/Decode case.

Ignoring that we know the show was planned to be a year long (we literally have quotes from the head writer that it's why he signed on to do it), and nothing minus the show or it's product line doing insanely bad would have changed that.

Your issue is you seem to think the film is introductory. It isn't. It's simply related. It wasn't a film people were rushing to see. It wasn't even a standalone release. It was part of a triple feature as part of that springs Toei Animation Fair. Digimon was at the bottom of the list of what people were going to see. They were going to see Dr. Slump and Yu-Gi-Oh.

The way you think things work in the business is clearly not correct. I'm also not really sure why you've mentioned Re:Digitize at all, especially since you don't really explain what the context was (it's suggested by what you were talking about, but not very well.) You seem to think the intro animation for Re:Digitize was an OVA?

Having Kenji designing your fanmade digimon partner is really great honor and Ultimate Wet Dream!

*Thinking of my WildGaomon (African Wild Dog) and Wingmon Series or other fanmade digimon ones being designed by him* How awesome is that... Shame and pity I just cannot reach my dream too bad. But I hope twitter will show the galleries of the lucky ones having their partners designed.

I'm assuming they were counting the 02 kids as being six kids, and momentarily forgot that there's a two-kid overlap between 01 and 02.
