We start with crazy lighting and stuff growing out of a girl, and Hiro is watching and not pleased at this.

And we jump to Hiro and Kiyoshiro hanging out with Gyukimon and Angoramon warning them over video chat about how dangerous he is.

If it bites you you turn into Gyukimon, who doesn't appear naturally, just from that way.

Gyukimon claims he's Ryudamon, and this just randomly happened to him in the human world. He's very adamant he hasn't attacked anyone, and Angoramon points out Gyukimon should be much larger. He claims he met Hokuto who told him if he was ever in trouble, find Hiro.

Kiyoshiro and everyone else doesn't like the idea of helping the potentially crazy dangerous Digimon.

They want to go find Bakumon for potential help. Kiyoshiro is going to hide.

Field trip tomorrow, Gammamon goes off to get chocolate.

Next day on the trip, Kotaro is hitting on someone. Ryudamon catches Gammamon after he falls, having come with them on the field trip.

Kiyoshiro pops in for roll call, and both him and Jellymon freak out finding Ryudamon. Jellymon really wants nothing to do with a Ryudamon. Gammamon shares his chocolate.

Late at night Ryudamon is bashing his head into the desk reminding himself he's Ryudamon and he won't hurt anyone. Although he's clearly strugging and starts to think he should just leave while he can still control himself.

And they arrive at the facility on an island for the field trip. Gyukimon/Ryudamon is gone from Hiro's bag.

This freaks out Kiyoshiro more, since it means now they don't know where he is and he's dangerous.

Kiyoshiro wants Gammamon to protect him since Jellymon wandered off, and we get Ryukimon yelling at himself and attacks Niijima His voice starts to corrupt into something else declaring it won.

After injecting her with the liquid on its back it's back to talking like Ryudamon who freaks out and leaves.

Hiro is asked to take some food to Niijima since she wasn't feeling well. We're back to the scene at the beginning, as she starts to turn into a Gyukimon.

Hiro closes the door and asks her to stay as he runs off for help.

A Gyukimon gets Kotaro in the forest. After biting him the original starts to get larger and begins to freak out about turning into a Ryukimon. Hiro brings back Kiyoshiro and the room is empty, until Niijima jumps down from the ceiling. And Kotaro wanders down from the hallway half Gyukimon.

Jellymon pops out of the floor and launches him up. We get panning shots of the place they're staying with kids in various stages of turning into Gyukimon, and the original Ryudamon one is much larger now.

Jellymon blames Hiro for all this, Kiyoshiro says they should have waited for Bakumon and not taken Gyukimon with them. Bakumon is at Ruli's and points out how stupid doing this was, and luckily he found the note they left for him.

Bakumon doesn't know if they can turn Digimon back, and the call cuts out before he can say much more. Bakumon points out without the call connection, he can't arrive on his own. Ruli asks Angoramon to call for Airdramon.

Jellymon points our Gyukimon is the proper size now, while Hiro is blaming himself.

Gammamon says Ryudamon is a friend and he'll save him and turn everyone back.

Gammamon evolves to Betel, with new dramatic BGM (I think.) Jellymon decides she has no choice to help and then it's Tesla.

Airdramon is zooming to the island while pointing out helping a Gyukimon is very reckless, but he respects their brave spirit.

Bakumon is curious how Angoramon and the others can de-evolve. Angoramon explains it feels right, and brings up Bokomon saying the Digivice was the key to that special ability to evolve at will.

Symbare jumps down as Airdramon arrives and the 3 adult forms go side by side. Bakumon says if they can get Gyukimon to remember being Ryudamon, they may be able to use the Digivice to force him back to his original form.

Canoweissmon shows up to try and beat some sense into Gyukimon, and Ryudamon's forehead gem appears on Gyukimon.

Canoweissmon forehead butts it, and we see Gammamon floating in an ether type space, and he goes into a dark cloud to find the same for Gyukimon. Yelling that he's looking for Ryudamon, not him, slashing it to reveal Ryudamon sitting there. It melts away in energy and light back to the normal world with both going back to Ryudamon and Gammamon.

Gammamon is happy he can say hello to his friend properly now. Ryudamon is quite overjoyed that he's back to normal.

Bakumon himself is able to return the humans and goes around with the other Digimon turning them back. He also tweaked their memories so they wouldn't remember.

Bakumon also chastises Hiro a bit for not thinking it through. No one is overtly accepting his apology, because how he is let them fix everything, and that's how he is, even if it was bad this time. Ryudamon gets to enjoy chocolate as Angoramon is puffy.

Hiro's Study Files this time is Gyukimon.

The first 15 or so minutes of the episode was pretty standard, if maybe slightly more exciting, but some of the stuff towards the end was very interesting, especially if it's followed up on. Above average episode, if maybe the transformation stuff was a bit overly focused on just going 'ooohhhh, weird' when the show has done that a few times at this point.

Masami Kikuchi played Ryudamon. On top of being one of the best known voice actors there is, with a never-ending list of credits, he's well known to Digimon fans for playing 'many' popular characters including but not limited to... Jou in Adventure and 02, Demon in 02, Dolphin and Grani in Tamers, Neemon and the narrator in Frontier (returning as Neemon in Adventure:), Kurata and Belphemon Rage Mode in Savers, Damemon/Tsuwarmon in Xros Wars, and a wide stack of other characters, both human and Digimon.

Outside of Digimon he's played, and this is just a small selection: Keiichi in Ah! My Goddess, Tenchi in Tenchi Muyo, at one point he was Baki in Baki the Grappler, various Gundam characters, he was Sonic & Metal Sonic in the old Sonic OVA... a literal endless list of roles. And for those who like finding out about dubbing roles for non-Japanese titles, he was the Japanese voice of Skeeter in Doug.

The idea of using a Digivice to revert a Digimon back to its true form is something I never considered. It feels like a reverse of Leomon gaining the power of evolution in Adventure. I can't think of any other examples, if any.

well there've been a few different examples of external (plot)devices effecting evolution in stuff like Tamers and Adv.2020, but yea, not much if any in regards to devolving. Though it seems they made a point that Gamma was a connection point to Ryuda, so that may be why lol

Well, there was the purifying function the D-scanner had

Anyway, damn good episode. This show really does body horror Well, and I like how the enemy this time wasn't a "surprise good guy", everything is crystal clear from the start. Wonder what Ryudamon will bring to the table in this series, since he's a seemingly important character, getting his own dim card and he knows Hokuto.

I stilll have a hunch that Ryudamon (Ouryumon) will later become Gammamon's Ultimate form's sword. But this time, not the Ouryuken we know, it's another form of sword.

I also thought about Leomon when I saw that.

So where's the real Gyukimon? Ryudamon transforming into Gyukimon for no reason was so odd.
I think the implication was that the real Gyukimon's spirit entered Ryudamon's body

The first part is so abrupt lol
I know it's not new in ghost game by now, but still

The pay off is pretty good though, finally we're exploring a bit more on the digivice and the mystery of evolution that's been presented since pretty much the beginning of this series.
Wish this means Ryudamon might become a partner to Hiro or something but doubt it, yet maybe? There's still that Ruli and TeslaJellymon that's never been addressed again yet so far.

Other interesting thing of note, some digimon do know Hiro's dad, but wonder why he send them to Hiro? Does he just have blind faith on his son's helpful nature and will be able to make it right somehow or is there really more about Hiro that we don't know yet? With the next week preview, hopefully it means we're about to go all in on the lore soon. (And I mean it's freaking episode 40, we're on 2/3 the usual length of Digimon or even more and already on the final evolution at this point, yet we're still very in the dark on what's going on in the background right now, I hope they don't plan to just dump everything in the last 10 episodes or so)

Nice episode! Ryudamon getting introduced as a Gyukimon was not what I expected, and it made things more interesting. Also it's rare to see Hiro making a mistake and being chastised for it, would be nice if they followed up to it. The devolution ability of the Digivice better be something they don't forget about like the time travel teleportation and partner switching!

It doesn't really matter. Digimon are everywhere. It's just some random Gyukimon who infected Ryudamon. Kinda like how in horror movies we don't always get to see the patient zero werewolf, vampire, zombie etc.

The greatest episode I’ve seen with the debut of Ryudamon. Ryudamon is small, it was bigger in Chronicle. Gyukimon is like a dark evolution for Ryudamon and is Hokuto a character we’ve seen before?

Wow I really wondered where is the real Gyukimon and how did Ryudamon got infected so suddenly with no signs of bites?

I didn't expect the digivice actually have more purposes and no wonder Ruli had Jellymon evolved and Leomon in Adventure 01 evolved. It was the light the whole time. The guidance of the light? Eh?

Airdramon appeared again! Wow!

So where's the real Gyukimon? Ryudamon transforming into Gyukimon for no reason was so odd.

It seemed Gyukimon's "shadow"/"spirit" somehow infected Ryudamon and slowly turning Ryudamon's data corrupt to fade away as the Gyukimon data starts to take over so that's why Gyukimon returned to its original size and the personality grew more violet.

I think so? I never realize that until I read comments here. I simply thought Ryudamon got infected really out of nowhere with no signs of "infection" was due to poison secretly bit him without noticing like Gyukimon's profile mentioned but I don't think that was it.

And few comments pointing out the transformations to Gyukimon from humans came with bone crunching in process of turning into Gyukimon? Eeek! No wonder that sounded so pain! More worse than Ex-Tyranomon's shady fireball!

If it happened off screen then it's understandable, except here they even took the effort of showing the scene of Ryudamon transforming but literally nothing happened to him beforehand.

It was cool seeing the Digicore Interface being used on screen for the first time.

I do think it's the case that it happened off-screen. Ryudammon mentions it transformed while trying really hard not to. Implying it was already aware it was something that was happening to it. So we don't know what happened to the original, is never told.

A decent episode, the best part was the continuity of characters from the returning humans like Nijima to Airdramon and Bakumon being relevant. Weakest part was definitely introducing Ryudamon - apparently he was thinking about Gyukimon and then suddenly transforms into him? Definitely felt like a scene was cut there or otherwise was confusingly conveyed. That said, the episode did a far better job of making me sympathise with Ryudamon's plight then either Digitamamon or Raremon did. Interesting that Hiro's hero complex finally was called out for being problematic. Do I dare dream that Devolving another Digimon via the Digivice is actually set-up for a plot point going forward and wasn't just a one-off DEX?

is Hokuto a character we’ve seen before?
It's interesting that you're far from the first person I've seen to ask this question today. Perhaps GG should have updated the intro sequence beyond just visuals so the narrator says something like "Hiro decides to help Digimon stranded in the Human World, hoping it might lead to a clue about his father in the Digital World." Since when you watch shows weekly, anything more than four episodes ago is already more than a month in the past.

Oh my bad. lol yeah I misremembered. Reminded myself as I read your comment while logged in. Oops.

If Airdramon is part of their air transportation, I'm curious about the marine transportation for this team in the future?

I wonder if Thetismon only can cure the poison and not to cure the certain types of liquids that transform humans/digimon? If it's true, then I find it pity...

Well, because he can fly and dive, I think that's when we see HoverEspimon in action.
