Digimon Card Battle Episode 5 & Rosemon, Mugendramon, & VenomVamdemon Previews from new Starter Decks

A new episode of Digimon Card Battle is up with episode 5 of the 'new version' format (it appears they are continuing with the Celebrity Invasion battle themes as well.)

This episode begins with various bits of card talk (and they do a lot after the match), as normal. They also announce that Hikaru Aoyama is joining as a new 4th host (I believe she was the week 2 opponent when Card Battle returned.)


The opponent is Takahashi, returning from week 3 of Celebrity Invasion.

Takahashi and Araki from Cocolo show off some of their cards before having a match.



And after the match we get a preview of some new cards...

We get one each from the new starter decks!

Rosemon from Starter Deck 4 gets some nice crisp and clean looking art.

Mugendramon from Starter Deck 5 gets him about to attack, and it appears like his proportions are weighted slightly different than we see for him.

VenomVamdemon from Starter Deck 6 gets a card with some quite menacing artwork from longtime Digimon designer As'Maria.

Just gonna say that the artwork on Mugendramon and VenomVamdemon definitely feels more "cover card" worthy imo, there was always something off about the BlitzGreymon and CresGarurumon artworks compared to HerakleKabuterimon in Green to me, so this kinda continues to convince me the decision to use those two as the cover cards for Black and Purple was one done very late in development.

As far as the cards themselves go. They seem fine. Assuming the translation is correct, Rosemon is just a Sorrow Blue on legs when evolved, while Mugendramon/VenomVamdemon grant Reboot/Retaliation respectively to 2 Digimon until the end of your opponent's turn when evolved. Nothing too crazy here.

I feel like Mugendramon and VenomVamdemon could have been cool if they permanently granted an ability to your Digimon, or at least for as long as Mugen/VenomVamde are on the field.

I did get a laugh out of Aoyama getting Araki's name wrong and then his Cocolo partner just goes along with it and uses the wrong name as well.

As for the newly revealed Starter Deck cards. Hmm...looks like you get a cheaper variant of each one, but the trade-off being a not as good effect.

personally I think starter deck Rosemon is the most lame of the three mostly because green has better ways to stall a game and it's literally just the option card Forbidden Temptation as its ability but that ability would now be taking up your very valuable Level 6 spots

Rosemon is very far from a card that your opponent won't feel the effect of in a match and it can win games but unless you're playing extremely heavy Green stalling and Suspending, most other Level 6s are the way to go and for what Rosemon is going for, Puppetmon is so so so much better for just 1 more Memory for its Play cost and 1,000 less DP

Machinedramon and VenomMyotismon are more interesting to me because they affect 2 Digimon you own including itself, allowing more room for interesting combos to happen rather than just stalling or beatsticking your way at Security. VenomMyotismon in a Purple/Green deck that uses Suspend and Retaliation effects to remove Digimon and fill its Trash seems interesting, for example. However, these are secondary Megas in a starter deck so idk why I'm being so critical lol

I just ordered some TCG singles from Ebay. Tsukaimon, Devidramon,Goddramon,(Starter deck) Holydramon and the Holy flame attack card..Now I'm waiting for them to make Gigadramon so my evolution line can be complete. (Tsukaimon-Devidramon-Gigadramon-Goddramon) Some of the evolution lines on Wikimon are great. Another one I LOVE is Tsukaimon-Youkomon-Cerberumon-Anubismon. Now I just have to wait for them to hopefully make the remaining 2 that I need.
