James Wong confirmed to direct. He directed 2 of the 3 'Final Destination' films, and the sci-fi kung-fu movie 'The One'.

Stephen Chow will be producing, you'd know him as the writer/director/star of films like Shaolin Soccer and Kung-Fu Hustle.

Goku will be played by Justin Chatwin from War of the Worlds.

Piccolo (evil Piccolo just to clarify) will be played by, uber beloved by fanboy and fangirls, actor James Marsters.

Being released on August 15, 2008.

...so is this more of a Dragonball movie than a Dragonball Z movie?

Wow. Spike? Marsters is like... perfect, now that I look at him. Maybe this won't totally bomb...

...then again, I'll also probably regret saying that...

I still have huge doubts about this movie, DBZ is just one of those anime that is not meant for theaters.

@Infinity Blade:
Can't help but assume that you're not involved much with the franchise, because, yes it does focus on a lot of elements that take place in the early part of the story.

Although, there is something worth mentioning in that since the books are known as "DragonBall" in their entirely elsewhere but the US, it's kinda difficult to state that it takes place anywhere besides, since the show was the medium that used the separation to deal with the time skip, which followed the events of King Piccolo's story that concluded Goku's childhood. (Physically, mentally is another story.)

@Gordo:
As great was Marster's is, it's not wise to bank your hopes on him, even if you're aware of its potential to make you regret the statement, it's just not worth raising your hopes over a single individual. One man couldn't have saved the Titanic, after all... unless he's Superman, or Bruce Khalish. The latter of which would save it, merely to find a more amusing and profitable way to sink it.

@Jadenik:
Eh, you can't judge a book by its cover like that. Doing that works less than any real specific media. DragonBall Z could, and have been done for theaters to a reasonable degree. Granted they were animated, but not all of the films done for it are awful. In live action, it's debatable, but it's possible to pull off. I mean... Superman had a good run, and Returns was actually fairly good.

At the end of the day, if Superman can be done, so can Goku. They share a lot of similarities. It all comes down to the script and the direction to determine it. And worst case scenario, we got the guy responsible for "The One" on the job, which was a bad ass film. I don't have high hopes of success for it (not every film can be saved by Spielberg.)

But, if there's one thing I've learned: it's neither productive, nor serving of much of anything, to be a doom sayer. Worst case scenario, it's awful, we move on. But thems the line of thought that made Transformers fans lose sleep. OH MY GOD, BAYS GOING TO RAPE OUR SHIT!

Goku will be played by Justin Chatwin from War of the Worlds.
Now I know why he could run headlong into an explosive conflict between the army and aliens, then show up at the end unharmed.

This is just so far beyond brilliantly, fabulously insane that I can't even describe it. This movie is going to be so wonderfully awful that I will *have* to see it.

I think I'll be in your boat as well, Chris. Half of me is mortally terrified of this, and the other half is so morbidly curious that I'll actually spend money to see it. Mostly because the director and producer have enough kung-fu cred to convince me that the action won't be cheap.

I just hope they don't screw it up. Sure lots of us have been waiting for it like forever, but it won't be much fun to ultimately get a huge FLOP. For the movie's sake, I SERIOUSLY hope the plot isn't the one we got posted here a little while back. That sucked big time...not as an original story, but as a DragonBall Z story. The production team seems promising, and if it's anything like Shaolin soccer, I guess it'll be okay-ish. I just don't want them to mess up something that was that good...considering DBGT pretty much sunk the whole ship. What could be worse?! Whatever though. We'll just wait and see. Whatever they do, it's not like we'll have anything to do but live with it.
