I really wish they just made Kouji yellow so that Izumi could be green and Junpei could be black, giving us kids in all 6 colors, but whatever I guess

Junpei was never going to be Black, all the Ancientbeetmon support is Green.

if black gets the death-x line, that might make it hard to choose my main colour between black and purple.

are you basing it mostly off of the Digimon within the colors or is there a gameplay style you like more?
Also access to Millenniumon is very nice

in this case, the former more, though i do tended to consider purple as my main because i tend to preferpurples gameplay style, but i don't remember black sounding unfun either.
