And if you want a specific Ash hat, you have to go on the right time. In Japan.

I have a feeling the next game is in Kanto but AFTER S&M. It would make sense now. I'm hoping the dub gets the old VAs back as odd as that would be XD seems the movie is more of a what if

the new pokemon introduced in the trailer is Marshadow a legendary pokemon in gen 6 kinda like the equivalent of Mew or Celebi in the Alola region but yeah it was quite surprising that we're getting gen 4 and gen 6 pokemon cuz I thought that we would only get the first gens and it would be a remake of season 1 but this seems to be a mixture of both and who are those new companions?

This is interesting. A big change to what we all thought would happen. Plus Marshadow.

well I heard that they're premiering the movie on July 6th in Paris and only less than 2 weeks to go till it comes out... I hope it gets released and subbed ASAP

EDIT: Rica Matsumoto (voice of Satoshi) re-recorded the original theme song for the movie and also serves as the 2nd opening to Sun & Moon

It's been confirmed that they're releasing an english dub of the movie in theaters through fathom events on November 5th and 6th in the U.S.

Check the fathom events webiste to see if they're showing it near you!

Unless they pull back at least Veronica Taylor for Ash (I dont think the rest of the oc cast has much of a role?) I really don't care.

SO here were my impressions of news of it as they were coming out

Announcement: This gonna be awesome!

Story trailer: They went back to the old art style! Yes! Wait... who are these guys?!?! Why are later Gen Pokemon here?!?!

Confirmation about no Brock and Misty: Well, I already stopped caring about this movie ages ago.

Dub Announcement: Well thats cute, but is Veronica Taylor gonna be Ash?

As you can see my reactions took a nosedive to the ground. Like Digimon I grew up with the Pokemon anime as it aired. I was happy but as news started to come out I then didn't cared about the movie anymore when the new characters showed up. I wouldn't mind them if they didn't look generic and looked like they belonged in the movie because the art style made the movie look inconsistent like how Ash looks out of place in the Sun and Moon anime. Team Rocket looked like they belonged because they look like they're from the same movie as Ash but these new characters look out of place. I wouldn't care if Brock and Misty was in the movie or not. I assumed this movie takes place before Ash met any of them. Through with the case of Misty, I would assume before she joined with him in the next town because Ash saw Ho-oh after meeting Misty.

As for the Dub announcement, I dont really care about this movie at this point. The ONE thing that would have me caring for it is if Veronica Taylor voices Ash. Its been so long since she voiced Ash that I would love it if they brought her back but unfortunately I dont see it happening. I haven't been watching the anime because it got pulled from standard television and from that point you needed a cable service to watch Pokemon however at this point in time is when they changed the voice actors and she wasn't ash anymore since it got pulled. I have been watching some of the Pokemon movies that came out over the years but there has been so many since then that I just stopped. You know, one thing that would be interesting is if they brought back the old Pokemon theme for this movie.

^^^ Best as I can tell the movie starts off as a remake of the first episode and then after Ash sees Ho-oh it goes off in its own direction. It also apparently exist to advertise Marshadow the secret bonus mon of Sun/Moon and maaaybe advertise future Diamond/Pearl Remakes (because a lot of Pokemon appear to be from gen 4)

We won't get DPPt remakes yet. Maybe on the Switch in a few years but I thought it was an interesting movie. It sure was different. Nice idea for an anniversary movie.

I decided to finally watch this thing, the English dub anyways.

What I liked:
The animation is gorgeous for a Pokemon film. It's also really fast paced and dynamic. I love it. The battles have never looked this good

Pikachu is so much cuter than normal. I liked that he's portrayed a bit more dog like this time around scratching his ear with his feet.

I liked that Charmeleon got a lot more screen time than he did in the tv series where they kind of glossed over him because he wasn't as cute and marketable as Charmander and wasn't as badass as Charizard. I also liked that he didn't get a brand new personality and forget everything when evolving.

I did like that it retconned all 7 generations of Pokemon (though it looks like only gen 1,2,4,and 7 got represented?) instead of just gen 1 plus Ho-oh. Admittedly this makes it a bit weird Ho-Oh is treated as such a big deal when he's just one of many legendary Pokemon and his mythology is from a different region than where Ash is from. Like if it was taking place in Johto it would at least make sense?

Even though it was a pointless scene it was nice to see Ash actually earn his one badge instead of having it given to him for being a good Samaritan

The bad:
There is like no real story. There's a vague premise with the rainbow feather but there's no narrative cohesiveness. Scenes just sort of happen. Was repeating the Butterfree storyline necessary? They at least tied in Charmander with this movie's rival. The legendary beast from Johto seemed like they're meant to be a lot bigger deal than they were. We see Ash getting his Rainbow badge (because rainbow wing...rainbow badge I guess?) and stating its his third badge but this is the ONLY time its even stated he's collecting badges. Why even have this?

Team Rocket is superfluous and should have been omitted. And oh god I hate Meowth's dub voice soooo much. RIP Maddie.

Ash's voice , while not AS bad is still pretty forced and faked nowhere near as good as Miss Veronica Taylor and some of the delivery is just flat terrible. And although her role is minor I hated Delia Ketchum's voice in this as well it sounded too fake where as I think Miss Taylor pretty much used her normal voice since ya know she's close to the same age as Mrs.Ketchum as I imagine the new VA is and I have no idea why she would have to put on such a forced voice.

The final act is just a mess. Oh did Ash die? I didn't notice. Pikachu speaks which why isn't as cringe worthy as some reviews implied isn't needed. Also makes no sense. "I stay out of the ball because I want to be with you" except for the part when I refused to stay in the ball even when I hated you.

Marshadow is so poorly defined. Its like some sort of evil Pokemon that makes people and Pokemon go bad or something? There was a part where it seemed to turn Ash's heart into darkness and create negative feelings and...IT GOES ABSOLUTELY NOWHERE AND SERVES NO FREAKIN PURPOSE.

The movie is nice to look at but otherwise falls flat. It's like the animators mapped out an entire 13-26 episode series rebooting the showthen realized they were only doing a movie and decided to just throw their favorite parts in to 90 minutes.

2 rainbow wings out of 5. The fight scenes is what saves this

I grew out of Pokemon when I was 15. My 10 year old self would have loved this. Now, I don't really care, but I like to have a look at what Pokemon is doing, just to see where they're taking the franchise.

Ok, I loved this movie. Here's why.
1. Ash's voice. Sure, it wasn't that good, but it was still less annoying than original Ash. Seems more like a kid and less like a smoker.

2. His companions. Their meeting was chance. It never made sense to me in the original series that a couple of gym leaders just up and left their post and their families to travel with this particular trainer. At that point, nothing really stood out about him above the rest, not to mention he was a total stranger and a kid. Brock and Misty were great tho, and they are still the best, but the way these three met and got together was a nice touch.

3. Using Pokemon outside the Indigo region. Of course we know why we didn't see them before. They didn't exist yet. But in universe, that was a nice touch, that other trainers have pokemon from other regions you won't see in that one.

4. Retelling the stories, like the one with Charmander was cool, and using his old trainer as a rival. Although that one along with the gym battles were extremely rushed, and we didn't see any others. He just stopped his main journey to start another. Also, kinda a shame Gary wasn't in it as a rival, but we did actually get a glimpse this time of the trainers who got Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle. Gary of course being one of them.

I had asked a friend why he didn't watch it, and he said the only reason was because Pikachu talks in one scene. I'll admit that was weird, but from a perspective, it makes perfect sense, because we understand that Ash to a certain extent can understand Pikachu when it speaks. And man, did Pikachu learn iron tail pretty fast.
Honestly, I think this would be worthy of a sequel. Tho probably won't happen.

Um... They're doing a movie based with Lugia soon so it might be a sequel.

That's pretty cool. Could be redoing the originals. I really loved the first two movies, and even now they look incredible. Sadly missed out on 3 and beyond until recently (got all 20 movies and still haven't watched them all. Got up to Giratina). Even if it's not, Lugia's still worth of it, as it's such an awesome Pokemon.

1. Ash's voice. Sure, it wasn't that good, but it was still less annoying than original Ash. Seems more like a kid and less like a smoker.

To each his own about preference, I suppose. I mean the new voice doesn't sound anything like an actual kid or even a human being and just sounds like an incredibly fake and forced anime voice to me. Don't really get the smoker comparison for Miss Taylor? In the early episodes Ash's voice was much gruffer but that was gradually phased out that by the second broadcast season (around the volcano badge) it was pretty high pitched and doesn't sound anything remotely like a smoker and it sounded like a high-pitched 10-year old boy.

The meeting with the new group seemed very underdeveloped to me tbh. At the very least Misty had motivation because of Ash's bike debt and an implied (if you choose to put on your shipper goggles) crush on Ash. Brock wanted to travel to become a Pokemon breeder and I guess he felt bonded with Ash or something? These kids are just suddenly hanging around Ash to promote a theoretical upcoming Sinnoh remake for the video games.

3. Using Pokemon outside the Indigo region. Of course we know why we didn't see them before. They didn't exist yet. But in universe, that was a nice touch, that other trainers have pokemon from other regions you won't see in that one.

I don't mind it and I understand Ho-oh and Marshadow and I get the two companion trainers hail from Sinnoh using Sinnoh region Pokemon but I think the movie overdid it a bit. Why are the legendary beast native to the Johto region in Kanto? It would make sense for the Kanto Region to have mostly Kanto region Pokemon.

4. Retelling the stories, like the one with Charmander was cool, and using his old trainer as a rival. I liked that Charmeleon got more time to shine whereas it was rushed to Charizard stage in the tv series (I actually briefly thought it was going to remain a Charmeleon in the movie) and I liked that it didn't suddenly lose respect for Ash when it evolved.

I had asked a friend why he didn't watch it, and he said the only reason was because Pikachu talks in one scene. Pikachu talking didn't bother me it was just one line anyways. It was just imho completely stupid what he (she? it was a very feminine voice) said. Telling Ash it stays out of its Pokeball because (s)he always wants to be with Ash completely contradicts that Pikachu didn't want to be in its Pokeball when it hated Ash's guts.

Much better example. Sorry, was tired and couldn't think of any good comparisons. For some reason, that came to mind. Just meant that it was pretty rough, kinda scratchy, might say nails on chalkboard, tho I'm not sure that's even a good example.

YES! Oh man, I was glad they didn't do that with Bulbasaur and Squirtle. They didn't evolve in his company, so maybe wouldn't have been so bad. But yeah, never did get Charizard hating Ash so much after everything they went through just because he evolved.

And good points on everything else. A bunch of things I had forgotten about, like why they set out on their journey. After a while, I tend to forget stuff like that.

The last one was my favorite in over a decade so the fact the new one is following the movie makes me excited. I'll admit Ash's new (current voice) sounded weird from season 9 and %80 of Sinnoh but as soon as Unova came it really got good. I honestly feel Veronica's Ash sounded older myself. With that said I actually like both.

This was the first Pokemon movie I've seen since Pokemon 4ever was back when that first came to dvd. It kind of makes me want to watch all the Pokemon movies.
