tri. New Year's Art from January Animedia

Time for some more tri. art!

    Image Thumbnail (custom)

The new issue of Animedia features some really fun New Years art featuring Taichi, Yamato, Sora, and Piyomon.

All three kids are wearing kimonos for New Year's and posing with a mystical lion (I believe properly called a nian.)

This is from the January issue of Animedia, which can be ordered from CDJapan (affiliate link.)

Thanks to moetron for the image.

Yeah, I was originally going to write 'lion costume' because that's what the connotation normally is for this type of thing, but the eyes...

Originally I thought the joke was that it was supposed to be Agumon and Gabumon in it, since my understanding is they generally have two 'people' in them, but the eye colors don't match so... 'shrugs'

I 'think' the idea is it's supposed to be Leomon themed? But they made it look a little to much like a 'character' than a costume (which may be on purpose.)

That's cute but you have to wonder if there's someone in the costume. Also is that one of those Shiisas?

A nian is different from a shisa. The former are associated with the new year, the latter are guardian statues from Okinawa.

isn't nian a chinese creature? and shisa is a japanese creature? wouldn't it be make more sense for it to be the japanese creature? (unless they celebrate the chinese new year in japan)

The shisa is an Okinawan creature, so technically distinct from actual Japanese culture. But to answer your question, yes, a nian is Chinese. Probably there's a Japanese equivalent/pronunciation for it, as there are for most Chinese things. Anyway, the shisa are not associated with New Year's.

Remember, we already have a Shisamon (or however it's spelt)

To me, it just looks like Leomon is cosplaying...I cannot unsee it.
