Digivolving Spirits WarGreymon Design Process and Production Images, Part 2

Time for Part 2 of a behind the scenes look at the first figure in the new Digimon toyline!

Tamashii has put up their second article with various images and information on the design process for Digivolving Spirits WarGreymon.

Due to time issues we won't be translating the full article at the moment (but hopefully in the future), we're adding what details we can for context.

We left off with them going over the shape and mold details using a sample model made from the mold to iron out last minute details on the mold and materials used for the figure.

After that has been worked out, it's time to check colors and paint.

Color samples arrive from the factory. These colors are based on a 'decoration' master. The decoration master is used to show the correct mold and paint colors.

The left is the decoration master, while the right is one of the samples from the factory. They've noted there are some issues with this one that need to be corrected.

They recognize that one of the things that is most noticeable to fans when looking at figures in detail are the eyes, especially important to a character like Agumon, who has big eyes that fans will recognize, and in the case of WarGreymon, it's a core element of his face under a metallic mask. They put it as being where the soul of the character lives.

The look of the eyes, the gloss on the colors used, and quality of the printing used needs to be checked.

The images shows various corrections that needed to be made to the eyes.

Of course, with the figure complete, there is still more work to do. They need packaging for such a nice figure!

The packaging shows off the entire figure series visually, and they didn't want to compromise on the packaging, since they know many fans see the packaging itself as a collector's item.

They started with those feelings and goal to put their passion into the design of the packaging for Digivolving Spirits.

This was a design proposal that would have featured the figure as the primary element in the packaging.

This proposal also features small outlines on the left and right side. These were outlined based on the assumption they might want to add window boxes to the side so that the figure could be seen inside the box.

This proposal features an illustration as the main focus of the packaging, with a photo of the product on the back.

The goal with this proposal was to show off the character and personality of WarGreymon and Agumon. Notable is that the artwork is not the same as on the final package. The pose is similiar, but it's different art entirely, missing some of the 'figure based' touches of the final art (such as the wings being based on the Agumon toy head.) Agumon is also used purely as highlighting on one side, rather than featuring on the front.

Usually multiple package designs are made to find what works best for a specific figure, with varying patterns, etc. But this was being used to launch an entirely new brand... so they made almost 15. A number of additional designs and proposals are shown above. These show a range of uses of artwork, images of the figure, and even ideas for logos, fonts, and so forth.

The complete and finalized package! A premium package that features artwork from Kenji Watanabe!

The Diecast badge at the top is foil embossed.

One thing they've taken into account... the height of the packaging has been set. They show it sitting next to the packaging for MetalGarurumon to show how well they will fit on a shelf together.

    And the figure is done!

They call it the ultimate transformable Digimon toy... which going back to the beginning, was based on a single sketch proposal.

Digivolving Spirits #01 WarGreymon will officially be released on November 18th as the first release of Digivolving Spirits.

They hope you will feel and understand the quality and effort put into the figure when you get it.

But of course... this isn't the end...

They have grand ambitions and plans for Digivolving Spirits. They plan to go past the best known 8 partner Digimon from Adventure to showcase popular Digimon from various series.

The second is MetalGarurumon and the third is Diablomon, who they note has never been released in the past (Diablomon has recieved mini figurines, but all prior more deluxe figures ended up cancelled for various reasons.)

The 3d model of the MetalGarurumon figure seemed small when they compared sizes, especially with Agumon. They wanted the child levels (Gabumon and Agumon) to be more aligned, so they increased the size of the MetalGarurumon figure.

Diablomon has notes written by Kenji Watanabe of corrections to be made.

Part 1 of this behind the scenes look can be found here.

Since the figure is just about out in Japan Bandai decided to show off one other thing...

The figures begin with a very cute child form and...

Evolve to their ultimate forms via transformation!

    With something extra!

The first look at a now complete Angewomon figure! Angewomon was recently announced as the 4th figure in the Digivolving Spirits line.

That look at the packaging design is really neat, and to see how many versions they went through (and Watanabe sketches there are!).
