I want to believe: Iím not the biggest fan of Appmon but Iíd love for it to do well and start a silver age for this franchise; and with Tri and the games going strong there has literally never been a better chance for being picked up for a subsequent series since Frontier ended. So this is a pretty good timeslot?

◊ros Wars didnít really change the setting in any meaningful way. It just foisted all the plot threads onto the back burner. As of episode thirty (or twenty-one), however, it had much more going on than Appmon, so if Appmon takes a similar dive itís going to be pretty dismal. On the other hand, while ◊ros Wars had had some extremely interesting ideas before Death Generals, it had never been terribly competent at handling them. The story was an inspired mess in its first arc, but it was still a mess, and you could persuasively argue that the collapse of the story in its second arc was in major part the result of having too much going on to handle competently, at least with all the other production factors undermining the writing process ó which I will be happy to enumerate for the unenlightened, because it was a lot. Especially since the head writer, Riku Sanjō ó despite having produced some brilliant stuff ó has almost always overemphasised his main characters, dropping all the focus on supporting cast and subplots was a natural place to which to default.

All of which is a roundabout way of saying that Appmon may very well be spared all of this nonsense, even if there was a major retooling on the production end ó which we have no reason to assume in the first place, if GoC is right. In fairness, in the modern anime industry year-long shows (outside of the four Sunday morning Toei standbys) are much rarer than they were during the golden age of this franchise. The fact that Death Generals was the only time Digimon has ever moved timeslots before ó and the fact that Appmon is doing so now ó might have less to do with anything going on with the shows themselves than with the fact that they are the first shows in this franchise to occur in an era wherein broadcasters think almost exclusively in terms of one- and two-cour blocks rather than in four-cour ones.

Considering what we know about the new storyline and the fact that a new arc has been hinted heavily by the current plot reaching its climax it's just a typical mid-season finale kinda deal. Seven Death Generals was a full blown relaunch after a very long hiatus that introduced a bunch of new antagonists out of nowhere. Appmon is continuing without pause and is using the antagonists, and likely the God Grades, that we've known about for months. I really doubt it's the same situation at all.

"A very long hiatus" was... less than a month? It wasn't even really a hiatus, it was just waiting for it's new timeslot to be available.

And of course, shows introduce new antagonists out of nowhere all the time.

...in fact... we know Appmon is introducing multiple new antagonists.

His overall point stands. The retool may or may not have had anything to do with it, but we know there was a major retool; whereas, by contrast, the very fact that the next arc of Appmon contains elements weíve been expecting to see for awhile suggests that this is not a retool.

    Oh certainly.

But a big chunk of what he says doesn't describe a retail, but rather than taking a break and 'relaunching' it as a vaguely 'different Xros Wars'

From what little we know of the 'next' part of Appmon, that's basically happening here also, just... more planned (and of course, we don't know how 'big' some of the changes will be.)

And to say nothing of the fact of, even prior to the 'retooling' of 'later Xros Wars' all we know for sure is the Xros' they used changed. We know quite literally nothing about what the show would have been.

Well, itís a pretty safe guess that Skull Knightmon was going to join the heroes. While the darkness loader, the Death Generals, and evil Yū might have still been in the cards, taking Dark Knightmon out of the equation would have changed Ö actually it could have changed nothing about Death Generals except the final ten episodes and one other. Huh! If Yū had stayed on the bad guysí side even after Skull Knightmon switched allegiances (or if he didnít exist at all; he wasnít mentioned till episode eighteen, after all), then presumably it would have been Nene contributing him to the ◊ros with Shoutmon and Greymon. That might explain the oddity of giving Nene Mervamon instead of an evolution: they hadnít originally planned for her to need a digimon that would evolve, and when they decided to go that route, decided an evolved Sparrowmon would be insufficiently interesting, while giving her a new partner to evolve wouldnít make sense. Maybe thatís why Gravimon was originally the fourth Death General instead of the sixth: with only one new form instead of three between ◊ 5 B and ◊ 7, they might have moved the whole drama with Decker Dramon up a few episodes.

Well, anyway, it doesnít seem like Appmon is being retooled at all: itís just going into its next arc, as we all knew it would. Yūjin taking a more active role is something weíve been expecting literally since before the show aired, and they would need to introduce new bad guys eventually. The show, by all appearances, is proceeding as initially planned; itís just switching timeslots, possibly because itís selling well.
