David was starting to lose his patience, the terrible pun didn't do any favours as he looked angrily and menacingly at the Bukamon "Make another bad joke like that and I'll make you wish you'd have taken the attack and died..."
David looked at Mokumon and then back at the Bukamon "Did you know?... when you're in a burning house, before the fire can kill you the smoke will burn up your lungs. This is why many in that situation are practically begging to die to just end the pain.
You wouldn't want to experience that, would you?"
Without even needing the order, Mokumon went on to attack again.

If there was one thing to compliment, Lia had to admire the Digimon's tenacity despite the odds. That sort of drive would make it a good addition to her team... if it decided to join at all. Beggers couldn't be choosers, after all.
Folding her arms, Lia commanded, "One more Scratch, Totodile! Finish it off!"

Even as Gennai cautioned about allowing due time to think over the options, Oliver was preparing to enthusiastically accept the position of Digidestined. The next line however, caused the grin on his face to fade. Responsibility was a big word that often meant a big pain in the butt. What exactly was the old guy referring to, though? All the kids in the show had to do was travel around and help their monster buddies fight bad guys, basically the same thing as a journey with Pokémon. And Oliver had been looking forward to that for a while.
Marjorie moved up to stand beside her brother again. She didn't like when Ollie tried to speak for the both of them, but she guessed she was included as well. At least, their new guide seemed to be directing his response that way. She had heard Ollie use the term 'digidestined' when he jabbered about the Digimon cartoon. She apparently qualified as one, whatever that entailed. Just from the name, it sounded somewhat silly, but Gennai made it seem like something more dramatic. In answer to his bid to continue, she replied, "Sure. Please tell us more." She thought it would be rude not to listen. Besides, now that someone was starting to give an explanation, she was able to focus on that and calm down from the whirlpool of concerns that had begun to stir up in her mind.
Olliver didn't like when his sister tried to speak for the both of them. He certainly wasn't fond of possibly meeting a big group and being burdened with a chore either. He knew his sister wouldn't be easy to pull away now that she was interested, though. "Yeah okay," he sighed. "Tell us more."

"Very good, then," Gennai said with a nod. "The world you are looking at is a physical construct stored in a digital medium. What that means, in essence, is that it is more than just computer data—the Digimon are real, living creatures, capable of existing as solid matter in your world. They are much like the Pokémon you call 'Porygon', in this regard.

"This world's existence as a real place was never meant to be discovered. Unfortunately, one of your world's military organizations was able to crack the secret, and what they found is that a fully-grown Digimon is potentially far more powerful than any known Pokémon of your world."

It seemed that, true to the style of a quest-giving NPC, Gennai was programmed to repeat the same information word-for-word every time he was confronted with a new player.

"Desiring them as programmable weapons, they have dispatched an operative calling himself 'sonicstar229' into the Digital World, where he has begun infecting Digimon with a powerful virus that turns them completely loyal to him, not unlike a Black Gear or a Dark Ring. The difference is that the virus is not an external attachment that can be destroyed while sparing the Digimon; at this time, the only known way to expel such foreign code is to deresolve the Digimon, sending its data back here to Primary Village to be reborn.

"The individual responsible for this world's creation—known to us only as 'the Programmer'—did her best to combat this threat on her own, and for a short time, it seemed that she was gaining the upper hand. But, a few weeks ago, she mysteriously vanished, and sonicstar229 was able to continue virtually unopposed, if you'll excuse the pun. The Digital World itself must have sensed that the Programmer's life was in danger, and using a complex algorithm even I still don't fully understand, it selected a small group of Pokémon trainers to take her place in this fight and, even now, continues to search for more.

"The Digital World chose you because it believes you have what it takes to save it. Your mission, should you choose to accept it: Defeat sonicstar229, and eliminate the influence of his virus. If you are to succeed, I believe you must master the monsters of both worlds, Pokémon and Digimon alike."

He glanced between Oliver and Marjorie with a serious expression.

"As I said, whether you take on the mantle and responsibilities of DigiDestined is your decision. I won't blame you if you choose to walk away and return home, which I will explain how to do in a moment. However, if you and the others chosen stay together and battle as one, I truly believe you can and will succeed in preserving the balance of power."

    "Not so fast, pal! Bubbles!"

Another barrage of bubbles shot forth from Bukamon's mouth, passing through Mokumon's body once again with surprising force. A moment later, a warning alarm began blaring from David's Digivice, indicating that Mokumon was almost out of stamina.

Trying its best to follow David's orders, Mokumon did the only thing it believed he could possibly have meant.

    "Smoke!"

True to the attack's name, a cloud of smoke billowed out of Mokumon's body toward Bukamon, engulfing it. At once, the dinosaur began coughing uncontrollably and rubbing at its eyes.

"Gah, I can't see!" it exclaimed. "Okay, okay, I take back the 'foggy' joke! Gee whiz, get a sense of humor!"

By this point, Mokumon was completely exhausted with just 7.7% of its health remaining, and so far, all it had managed to do to its opponent was reduce its accuracy.

But for Celia and Totodile, victory was assured. Resigned to its fate, the DemiVeemon shut its eyes tightly and braced itself for the impending impact of Totodile's claws. From the Digimon's perspective, the wait seemed to last a lifetime.

And then it happened. Totodile's strike knocked DemiVeemon off its feet, and it fell to the ground, defeated. Its molecular integrity seemed to destabilize for a moment—one more blow would surely derez it. The decision rested with Celia—she could finish it off completely, or try to persuade it to join her.

Indicating to her Totodile to come to her side, Lia said to the DemiVeemon, "Hey, you didn't do too badly. So get up. I could use a Digimon like you."
Immediately she thought of how demanding that sounded; friendliness wasn't ever one of her strong suits, and this would possibly mean she'd have a harder time recruiting Digimon than other people.

Marjorie was having difficulty understanding what the elderly guide was trying to say at first. Her parents weren't big on computers - their occupation consisted mostly of field work - and neither was there a lot of demand for them in the village. She had only heard of Porygon mentioned in news articles. Gennai seemed to be reiterating that Digimon were alive, perhaps like Pokémon. When he showed no signs of pausing, Marjorie figured taking notes might be a good idea. She traded the digivice with the Pokétch from her vest, but stopped what she was doing upon hearing mention of the military.
Oliver slouched with his hands in his pockets. He was already tuning out, but perked up when Gennai began talking about Digimon being corrupted. He was able to pick out the jist by recognizing words that had been used in the cartoon. Basically, there was some jerk going around hurting Digimon, similar to what that criminal organization, Cipher, had done. The people in Agate always got upset when they related stories about the incident. The idea of Pokémon, and now Digimon, being abducted and experimented on made him feel angry, too.
Worry flooded back into Marjorie's thoughts. She had been in such a hurry to find Ollie, she had not much considered how they would get back. And they were allowed here to save the world? Shouldn't that be left to more-experienced trainers? She looked to her brother, expected him to be just as nervous, but this time he was the one that seemed interested.
"So we just have to beat one guy in a battle and we can save all the Digimon?" Oliver reasoned aloud, speaking more to himself than anyone else, "But we have to be Masters first?" He expected that would take a while, years even. Gennai had also said Digimon, so even longer? Digimon... Oliver's face suddenly beamed. He looked at the digital creatures then back at the old man. "We get to train Digimon, too?" he queried.
Without waiting for the reply, Marjorie interjected. "Wait, wait!" Her brother obviously was not thinking of consequences. "Ollie, what are you talking about? We can't stay here. We'll get in trouble, especially if soldiers are here." She put away her Pokétch and retrieved another device. "Maybe we should call mom and dad." She checked the Xtransceiver for reception.

David was slightly surprised that it had actually worked as an attack but slightly disappointed it didn't damage the digital monster.
Now with Bukamon having lowered his defence by two times and once for his accuracy the tamer contemplated whether it was worth the risk of continuing with Mokumon despite his low health.
At the uncertainty of whether his Digimon would faint or return to an egg form he decided he'd be better off playing it safe "Okay, Mokumon you did great, come back!" He then proceeded to Chimchars Poké Ball quite a bit farther than need to the point it was behind the Bukamon in hopes that he might be able to pull off a sneak attack, "Chimchar use Scratch!"

    Gennai's eyes widened.

"You must not!" he said firmly. "The true nature of the Digital World must never be revealed. If such knowledge were to reach the masses, the outcome could be disastrous."

He took a deep breath to relax himself before continuing.

"It is you who have received the Digivices, not your parents. The Programmer has placed her trust in you. Believe me when I say that that is nothing to sneeze at."

After a moment's silence, he then cracked a small grin.

"Also, there's no phone service here, but we do have Wi-Fi. The password is BUTTER-FLY. All caps, with a hyphen."

    *~-._/NATIVE FOREST\_.-~*

It was hard to tell at first whether the DemiVeemon's silence was out of dismissal, grief, or simply disorientation. It lay there a good five seconds, making neither sound nor movement. Then, it lifted its head, its eyes wide and tears freely streaming.

"You mean it?" it asked Celia softly, as if disbelieving. "You....you really want me, even though I lost?"

It seemed the creature was just like a child. It was impressed with Celia's strength, and had tried to impress her in return by acting tough. Its stubbornness could have gotten it killed. But this human had chosen to spare it; more than that, she was offering it a place in her ranks. Despite its defeat—its weakness—she had recognized its will to fight. Its potential.

With great difficulty, it forced itself back to its feet, raising a foreleg to wipe the tears from its face. It then looked Celia in the eye and gave an affirmative nod.

"I won't let you down," it declared.

Immediately, Celia's Digivice lit up with a notification saying that DemiVeemon had been registered to it.

Alex64, you may now control DemiVeemon as one of your own characters.
It also noted that Kuramon had gained 5 Mb worth of experience and grown to Level 4, meaning it could now be permanently Digivolved to a compatible In-Training form of Celia's choice. The Pokédex, meanwhile, displayed that Totodile had gained 36 experience points and was just shy of growing to Level 6.

For David, things weren't necessarily going as well. While his Chimchar's speed was greater than Bukamon's, it still took it a moment to get itself reoriented immediately after coming out of its Poké Ball. Once again, Bukamon had an opening to attack.

    "Bubbles!"

And once again, the attack....missed completely?!

Suddenly, there was a glimmer of hope. It seemed that Mokumon's attack had done its job. As the new round opened, Chimchar lunged at Bukamon and swung with all its strength.

The sound of nails cutting scales seemed to echo through the woods as the attack knocked Bukamon back hard. If Digimon could bleed, the sight would have been sickening to behold. Its haughty, obnoxious demeanor had vanished, replaced by the unmistakable quiver of fear.

"H-hey!" it panicked. "I-I was only kidding before! The whole 'chicken' thing, that was....th-that was a compliment! I mean, who doesn't like chicken, right?!"

It cringed at its own lame attempt at covering its behind. Its wit having escaped it, it forewent any further chatter and tried to recover some dignity with another attack to finish the round.

    "Bubbles!"

This time, Bukamon managed to hit its target, but it didn't accomplish much in the scheme of things. It may have still had 35.3% health compared to Chimchar's 31.6%, but the latter could hit much harder and would likely win with one more attack.

"Good to have you with us," Celia nodded in approval. Noticing her Digivice had lit up once more, she took a look at it, surprised at how quickly Kuramon had grown.
"Level 4 already? Damn, that was quick..." Seeing that she now had the option to advance Kuramon to an In-Training form, Lia decided to look through her options; she'd rather not have the Digimon become a liability if she could avoid it.

The twins were both a little startled - Marjorie because of the sudden exclamation and Oliver because Gennai actually opened his eyes.
Marjorie lowered her Xtransceiver. She had just been informed of a dangerous scenario that someone wanted to involve her in, yet it seemed that telling anyone else about the Digital World would clearly also cause problems. She could back out, but she would still know about it. And, of course, there was her brother to think about.
"See," Oliver began to his sister, "We were chosen, so it's fine." She always worried too much."You're being rude," he added playfully. Marjie was constantly reminding him of manners; whenever he could point out her being hypocritical, she was thrown off.
"No I'm not," Marjorie huffed, although she realized she had indeed interrupted. Ollie's statement wasn't clarified outwardly, but she knew he must have had some deeper meaning in mind, and that was enough to somewhat reassure her. She took a moment to scan her surroundings again. Then she turned her attention back to Gennai and apologized, then continued into a question. "So, if I go back home now, I can't come back? And, if we agree to stay, we can't go home until we complete our mission?" It felt strange to say the last few words. "Is that correct?"
Oliver frowned. This was a grand opportunity. Of course they weren't going back so soon. At least, he hoped his sister was thinking something along the same lines.
