*~-._/FILE CITY — PRIMARY VILLAGE\_.-~*
"Very good, then," Gennai said with a nod. "The world you are looking at is a physical construct stored in a digital medium. What that means, in essence, is that it is more than just computer data—the Digimon are real, living creatures, capable of existing as solid matter in your world. They are much like the Pokémon you call 'Porygon', in this regard.
"This world's existence as a real place was never meant to be discovered. Unfortunately, one of your world's military organizations was able to crack the secret, and what they found is that a fully-grown Digimon is potentially far more powerful than any known Pokémon of your world."
It seemed that, true to the style of a quest-giving NPC, Gennai was programmed to repeat the same information word-for-word every time he was confronted with a new player.
"Desiring them as programmable weapons, they have dispatched an operative calling himself 'sonicstar229' into the Digital World, where he has begun infecting Digimon with a powerful virus that turns them completely loyal to him, not unlike a Black Gear or a Dark Ring. The difference is that the virus is not an external attachment that can be destroyed while sparing the Digimon; at this time, the only known way to expel such foreign code is to deresolve the Digimon, sending its data back here to Primary Village to be reborn.
"The individual responsible for this world's creation—known to us only as 'the Programmer'—did her best to combat this threat on her own, and for a short time, it seemed that she was gaining the upper hand. But, a few weeks ago, she mysteriously vanished, and sonicstar229 was able to continue virtually unopposed, if you'll excuse the pun. The Digital World itself must have sensed that the Programmer's life was in danger, and using a complex algorithm even I still don't fully understand, it selected a small group of Pokémon trainers to take her place in this fight and, even now, continues to search for more.
"The Digital World chose you because it believes you have what it takes to save it. Your mission, should you choose to accept it: Defeat sonicstar229, and eliminate the influence of his virus. If you are to succeed, I believe you must master the monsters of both worlds, Pokémon and Digimon alike."
He glanced between Oliver and Marjorie with a serious expression.
"As I said, whether you take on the mantle and responsibilities of DigiDestined is your decision. I won't blame you if you choose to walk away and return home, which I will explain how to do in a moment. However, if you and the others chosen stay together and battle as one, I truly believe you can and will succeed in preserving the balance of power."
"Not so fast, pal! Bubbles!"
Another barrage of bubbles shot forth from Bukamon's mouth, passing through Mokumon's body once again with surprising force. A moment later, a warning alarm began blaring from David's Digivice, indicating that Mokumon was almost out of stamina.
Trying its best to follow David's orders, Mokumon did the only thing it believed he could possibly have meant.
True to the attack's name, a cloud of smoke billowed out of Mokumon's body toward Bukamon, engulfing it. At once, the dinosaur began coughing uncontrollably and rubbing at its eyes.
"Gah, I can't see!" it exclaimed. "Okay, okay, I take back the 'foggy' joke! Gee whiz, get a sense of humor!"
By this point, Mokumon was completely exhausted with just 7.7% of its health remaining, and so far, all it had managed to do to its opponent was reduce its accuracy.
But for Celia and Totodile, victory was assured. Resigned to its fate, the DemiVeemon shut its eyes tightly and braced itself for the impending impact of Totodile's claws. From the Digimon's perspective, the wait seemed to last a lifetime.
And then it happened. Totodile's strike knocked DemiVeemon off its feet, and it fell to the ground, defeated. Its molecular integrity seemed to destabilize for a moment—one more blow would surely derez it. The decision rested with Celia—she could finish it off completely, or try to persuade it to join her.
