what's wrong with chat speak (alot of which is in the dictionary) it is the same as normal speaking/writing/typing just shorter and alot more people understand chat speak since that what people use more that 85% of the time even when they don't know that they are using it so i really find that rule to have no grounds of being mostly since this has a lot of gaming posts on site

Chat speak is a poor excuse for not writing in the English language. We do not care what other sites allow, it is not allowed here, end of story.

@Ryuu
I mean this with the greatest possible offense, you are astonishingly retarded.

"what's wrong with chat speak"
Pretty much everything about it is wrong; it destroys an otherwise perfectly good (although, admittedly, not perfect itself) language, its incredibly lazy, and its simply a method by which children use to disregard writing formalities that they do not fully understand. It also makes them look stupid in the process.

Hmm, I think you overestimate the adoption as beyond that of a niche of children and lazy people, but the reality for you sir, is that the internet is more commonly availed to people with writing ability, and not a small group of lazy fucks with nothing better to do than whine about how they can't type the way they want to.

You should be ashamed of yourself for advocating such nonsense.

As for what grounds we have, let me try and understand this, you're saying that shorthand and video games are mutally exclusive concepts, and that having a forum dedicated to them means we should be allowing it?! I think you need to pull your head out of your ass and see the forest for the trees. Not everyone, and certainly not as many as you think, or for that matter particularly video game players, use shorthand as a device for typing lazily. Its a bullshit assumption to suggest this as the case.

Of course, I'll humor you for a moment, even if people did speak in shorthand in as great a numbers as you suggest, we would still have no reason to cater to them, and grounds to cater to people with actually writing ability. You know why? Because we have no obligation to follow internet trends. We can cater to whomever the fuck we want.

But, nice job trying to disguise an attempt to subvert our rules for personal gain. Only problem is, you just aren't smart enough to actually accomplish those ends. I hate to break it to you, but your level of argument had no hope of getting you what you wanted.

"(alot of which is in the dictionary)"
No self-respecting dictionary carries such reprehensible, linguistically degrading dreck. You must be confusing real dictionaries with fake internet dictionaries that don't have any clout in the academic world.

Oh, and a last note, if people don't even realize they're using shorthand, it would be worth it not to lump yourself in with those career morons. I mean, unless you're alright with being associated to a group of mouth-breathing dullards, but to me that seems like a group one shouldn't strive to be counted amongst.

Huh? i didn't say anything about other sites..well since its such a poor excuse then why not disallow all contractons or any shortened form of a word at all? and is it not possible for ppl = people to shorten what they say when they don't have time to type or are using alternate forms of posting like right now i'm posting from my wii and its exausting hitting all of these buttons -LAUGH OUT LOUD- i just think maybe if you guys losen up on having such strict rules more people would have fun on your site instead of marching in line like zombies -LAUGH OUT LOUD AGAIN-

1 this is not for personal gain its for all those who would like to be on your site but are afraide to join because of grammar nazis

2 for you to insult me when i haven't even directed any anger or anything towards you shows that your are trying to use your "intellectuality" to prove that you are better than others

3 for the fact that you even have to curse at all prove a point for the validity of anything that you are saying is not only insulting to anyone who supports your agument but those who actually can have an intellegent conversation

4 i never said you have to follow internet trends but i am saying that you should cater to those support your site on other media forms such as gaming consoles

5 never call me retarted it'll just make you look stupid in the end

6 there are 17 new words added to the dictionary all derived from chat speak

7 and when i say all speak in chat speak i meant in a shorten form of english so back off prick

g dullards, but to me that seems like a group one shouldn't strive to be counted amongst.

Taking the Oxford English dictionary as a standard you are correct.

By the way, pretty much the only word that comes close is 'noob'. For a cuiloquism to be added it has to be used by 'the media' a certain number of times (I think its 1000 but don't hold me to it).

But while I do not necessarily agree with this sites rules policy (I think it puts people off and limits the number of users. It has its benefits, such as keeping the 'rabble' away but I think the same could be achieved with a slightly more relaxed atmosphere but it's your site, your rules so fair cop (not complaining, just my opinion)), it is their site and if you don't like it you don't have to stay.

By the way, you can plug a usb keyboard into your wii Wink

Sorry if I offended anyone with that but I don't think I can please everyone in this thread  Roll Eyes

@Dragon Dumbass
"well since its such a poor excuse then why not disallow all contractons or any shortened form of a word at all?"
Well, now there's a compelling, if poorly executed, question. I am impressed you managed to squeeze something like that out. As for an answer, there really isn't one, although I'd like to its out of my hands. But I'll tell you one thing, contractions are far less extreme than shorthand, at least their goal is not to strip out over half of the characters that exists in the world to make it a bite size shell of the word it formerly was.

"and is it not possible for ppl = people to shorten what they say when they don't have time to type or are using alternate forms of posting like right now i'm posting from my wii and its exausting hitting all of these buttons"
No, no it isn't. Your time constraints and your devices by which you use to come to this forum are not my concern, and it isn't my problem. However, in the case of a lack of time, if you don't have it then don't waste it. Like I've always said, the forum will still be here when you get back- it isn't going to run away on you if you get what you need done first and then come back to it. I mean, it shouldn't conflict with your life at large, and it shouldn't be our problem to deal with just because you want to crack out a post in a rush.

If you can't take more than 5-10 minutes to write up a coherent post, that is written at a grade school level, then just wait on it. The post will be better for it, if its a meaningful one to begin with.

"i just think maybe if you guys losen up on having such strict rules more people would have fun on your site instead of marching in line like zombies"
I am not sure at what point I indicated that I cared about your opinion, but its funny you say that. You see the rest of our member base, the ones with the high post counts? Can you enlighten me as to why they are still here if they aren't having any fun? I am certainly not forcing them to be here, in fact, its always their choice whether they stay or not. And so long as they don't break the rules, they're free do post as they see fit to. Its an easy concept, you don't fuck around, you wont get smacked down.

You know, like a good forum does, it keeps the peace while trying not to intrude upon the members enjoying themselves unless absolutely necessary.

"1 this is not for personal gain its for all those who would like to be on your site but are afraide to join because of grammar nazis"
Oh so noble you are, sir bullshitter. I raise my hand up high, and I say unto you- REPENT SINNER, CAST OFF YOUR DARK WAYS AND COME UNTO THE FOLD!

"2 for you to insult me when i haven't even directed any anger or anything towards you shows that your are trying to use your "intellectuality" to prove that you are better than others"
Anger, mayhaps not, but you're sure bitching a lot. Plus, stupidity gets called on, no buts. As for intellectuality, I never really said I was an intellectual or better than anyone else. I am just an ass.

"3 for the fact that you even have to curse at all prove a point for the validity of anything that you are saying is not only insulting to anyone who supports your agument but those who actually can have an intellegent conversation"
Not really, no, its only really insulting to the people that can't type properly. Because you're not going to be able to have a meaningful, let alone intelligent, conversation when you can't even spell properly. Short bursts of words are counterproductive to meaningful discourse.

"4 i never said you have to follow internet trends but i am saying that you should cater to those support your site on other media forms such as gaming consoles"
Of course you have, dumbass, by saying we should allow shorthand you've effectively stated we need to accept what is in reality, inconsequential shit, i.e. trends of the interwebs. Also, a video game console doesn't constitute as a form of 'media'. Anyway, why should we cater to people on consoles? Where will it end, catering to people on the iPhone? No. If you use your console, the onus isn't on us for your decision.

"5 never call me retarted it'll just make you look stupid in the end"
You'd think, but you're doing such a good job of making yourself look stupid, I don't think anyone will notice that I am a little stupid. Well, anymore than usual.

"6 there are 17 new words added to the dictionary all derived from chat speak"
Not in any academically recognized dictionary I know of, friend. But then, I guess for you folks, legitimate sources aren't important as long as the information is 'there'.

"7 and when i say all speak in chat speak i meant in a shorten form of english so back off prick"
Shorthand is not a mutually exclusive concept to contractions. Not all people butcher the english language, even as effectively as you do. As for backing off, I don't have to.

@elephantinc
"I think it puts people off and limits the number of users."
I think you drastically over estimate Digimon's fanbase. Granted, it is pretty big for its relativity is a niche interest, but its still excessively small. And especially during times there isn't a series on-going, the activity will dip, especially if your forum only caters to that particular group. We may have limited our users, and put people off, but more likely than not, these would have been people who could not follow the rules, or did not want to. If someone is like that, well, I am not hurt if they aren't here. They are free to make their own decisions.

As for a relaxed atmosphere, I don't really see how it can be anymore relaxed short of tossing out the rules entirely. I mean, so long as members don't conflict with the rules, they have nothing to fear and can continue on their merry way, and do as they so choose. But I'll tell you, no, not really. People don't respond the way you need them to by being extra special nice, they fight established authority like they have rights. Sometimes you have to get a little mean.
